Why I HATE Fantasy Sports PDF Print E-mail
Fantasy Baseball Beginners
Written by Kevin Orris

Monday Night Baseball on ESPN provided us with a fantastic pitching matchup, featuring two of the best pitchers of this decade in Derek Lowe of the Atlanta Braves and Johan Santana of the New York Mets. I don’t know about you, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching this game on mute so that I didn’t have to hear how big of a deal it was that Santana gave up a hit in the first inning, or that he allowed two unearned runs in the duel.

I’m sure that thousands of fantasy owners tuned in to watch considering the game featured the two aces as well as Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, and Brian McCann.  I was excited for this game, because I have Derek Lowe on one of my fantasy teams, and the most important one at that.  I always love watching great pitchers pitch.  On this very same team, my staff also boasts the likes of Johan Santana.

What is an owner to do in this situation?  Well for me, this was a very easy decision; hope that Johan gets drilled.

Did I really just say that I hope that the ace of my staff gets killed?  Yeah, I did.  It wasn’t even a hard decision.  I wish that those runs were earned and that the Braves tallied double digit hits against him, unfortunately they failed me.  Yay, my fantasy team’s statistics were increased due to two quality starts from the two best pitchers on my team.

I was furious.  Why?  Because I’m a Braves fan.  In all honesty, I hate fantasy sports (and I even write for a fantasy sports website).  There’s nothing better to me than watching my favorite team, the Atlanta Braves, beat up another teams ace and all the while, I can do the tomahawk chop and make my neighbors concerned that some Native Americans were robbing my house.

I enjoyed every minute that a Braves hitter was at the plate and connected on a Johan changeup and was able to reach first on an infield single.  I understand that fantasy sports have done a lot for the game of baseball, and has tremendously increased the average baseball IQ of the typical fan, but how could anyone root for Johan in my situation?

When you were little, did you draft a fantasy team and then keep all of those guys for the rest of your life, while making the occasional trade, and sport a jersey and cap for that team to their home games?  Well no, because when you’re under the age of five you can’t identify more than 10 baseball players, much less I’ve only seen one lunatic wearing a jersey for his fantasy team.

I understand that you can win money in fantasy baseball, but there’s nothing better than your team winning a championship.  I hate the Phillies, but I was so excited for their fans to be able to celebrate a championship last year.

I grew up a Braves fan, and that’s what I’ll always be.  Not a fan of “Mannyneedsananny, ” or “Ubaldo DiCaprio.”  Yeah, each of these teams provides me with some entertainment in other games, and keeps me interested when the Braves have a travel day.  Even if we get down to the last game of the season and this matchup once again appears, and the playoffs are on the line along with the title of my fantasy league, you’ll see me decked out in Braves gear while doing the chop in my Native American headgear.

Go and try to have a party on the streets after your fantasy team takes home the title and see who else cares.

For those of you who are just beginning fantasy baseball, do you find yourself rooting for your fantasy team or for your true team?  What situations do you root for your fantasy team over your real team?  Let me hear it, because I know that some of you think that I'm crazy.

Are you saying that you're a Dodgers fan? I'm sort of confused on your post, but yes, you are accurate. Fantasy sports is a way to get your mind off of the recession, but to me, I'd rather root on the Braves every day. I can watch the
Braves all at one time, and on a daily basis they either win or lose. Not gain .5 points in the standings.

Cheering for our favorite baseball team is a great way to relax in the middle of this economic crisis. However, there are instances that sport isn’t as fun as it is supposed to be. Manny Ramirez seems to have controversy follow him wherever he goes. He angered and alienated fans in Boston (despite helping them to World Series titles in 2004 and 2007) and was traded in 2008 to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Well, now he'll be sitting out for a third of a season, as he has tested positive for performance enhancing drugs, netting a 50 game suspension. He won't need payday loans, but he's the latest addition to a list of big names in Major League Baseball to take steroids. Oddly enough, the kind he took is used to treat female infertility. His agent had no comment, but many would get out credit cards to see Manny Ramirez suspended indefinitely.

Derek-

There are people that you can see to help you with that. I can't blame you, since you are a Mets fan, but I think everyone should stick to their original loyalties. It's really taken a toll in the past few years that I've noticed (I can't remember back a decade ago), and it needs to be fixed.

I've gotta admit - I've taken the plunge. I've passed the point where I care more about my fantasy teams than I do about my favorite real team.
