As baseball races to the trade deadline there's lots to watch with hot and cold fantasy players. Here's a look at some recent trends.
Nuke Rickie Weeks, 2B MIL - 7 HRs in the last 14 days has Weeks sitting atop 2Bs in the power department. Many were afraid to roll the dice on draft day because of the injury history but a few calculated gambles pay off every fantasy baseball season. 30-35 HRs and a pile of Runs and RBIs are in his sights. Jose Bautista, OF TOR - Bautista is heating back up with 4 bombs in the last 3 nights. He's once again on pace to tickle 50 HRs on the year. He's a pure power hitter and classically streaky. As such he's a flat out stud in roto formats and slightly less valuable in head-to-head leagues. Delmon Young, OF MIN - During the past two weeks Delmon Young has been scorching the ball to the tune of a .468 BA along with 4 HRs. At age 24 it looks like he's finally breaking out. Temper you long-term expectations however. The .300 BA is legit but he may be topping out in the low 20s for HRs and his SBs may struggle to hit double digits. Travis Wood, SP CIN - Only 1 win in 6 starts but focus on Wood's 3 to 1 K/BB ratio and nearly 8 Ks per 9. He's done this in the minors so believe it's for real and make the investment if you still have a shot. He logged nearly 170 inning in the minors last season so unlike other rookies the possibilities of an innings limit seems remote. He may be a top 5 rookie pitcher by the end of the year. Cryo Stephen Strasburg, SP WAS - Yes, he is all that and a bag of potato chips. However, he is wisely being handled with kid gloves by the Nationals. Some tightness in the back of his shoulder during warm ups have Strasburg on the 15-day DL. Any other pitcher on any other team would have just skipped a start but Strasburg is different. They still want to target 160 innings but they're not going to push him, making his remaining starts somewhat uncertain. Time to sell for 2010. Ubaldo Jimenez, SP COL - With a sub-1.00 ERA in both April and May, Jimenez was easily the best pitcher on earth. Hard to say you should have sold high because if you owned him chances are you were a true believe from the start. As expected the inevitable regression to the mean is wailing on Jimenez's stat line with an inflated ERA of nearly 8 for the month of July. He'll bounce back at some point so give him a seat until he finds his mojo. For more fantasy baseball insights Sign Up for the Fantasy Pros 911 Premium Site. Trackback(0)
