Hello again NHL fans! Sorry for the few weeks layoff, I just had some personal issues to attend to. It’s a new week and that means NHL Power Rankings here at Fantasypros911.com! Just remember when reading these rankings that the teams are ranked with where they are RIGHT now, not necessarily where they will end up at the end. With that out of the way, off to the rankings!
NOTE: The number before the review is this week’s ranking.
(1)---New Jersey Devils--- Even though they lost their last two games (not to mention potentially losing Patrik Elias), the Devils still appear to be the team to beat in the East.
(2)---Chicago Blackhawks--- With the top offense and the top defense in the Western Conference, the
Blackhawks are legitimate contenders for the Stanley Cup in the spring. Until then, it looks like it’s going
to be a battle between the ‘Hawks and the Sharks for home ice advantage.
(3)---San Jose Sharks--- Speaking of the Sharks, they are having yet another great regular season. The question is whether the success will carry over into the playoffs.
(4)---Buffalo Sabres--- Looking ahead to the second half of the season and beyond to the playoffs, if Ryan Miller can continue at the pace he is going, can you say Vezina?
(5)---Washington Capitals--- With twelve points in his last five games, Alex Ovechkin is proving why he is probably the top offensive player in the game. He is on pace to have 108 points in 68 games which is pretty impressive if you ask me.
(6)---Colorado Avalanche--- Probably the biggest surprise of the NHL this season, the Avalanche looks like they are here to stay. Big win over the Devils on home ice.
(7)---Nashville Predators--- If the season ended today, the Predators would have home-ice advantage in the first round. I bet not many people saw that coming.
(8)---Pittsburgh Penguins--- The Penguins have won two straight after struggling for the past few weeks. They are still one of the most dangerous teams in the league, if only because if Malkin and Crosby get hot they are as good as anyone.
(9)---Calgary Flames--- While winning only half your home games is usually not conducive to winning hockey; the Flames find themselves right in the thick of it in the Northwest.
(10)---Detroit Red Wings--- If there has been a team in the NHL who seems to have the worst luck of the year, look no further then the Red Wings. They are starting to get healthy at the right time.
(11)---Phoenix Coyotes--- With a suspect fan base at best, the Coyotes are sure putting an entertaining and quality product on the ice for the fans who do come to Jobing.com Arena. Playoffs anyone?
(12)---Boston Bruins--- Even through the Bruins have lost four of six, one of those wins came at San Jose which is not an easy place to win.
(13)---Vancouver Canucks--- The Canucks have lost three games in a row however there is some light at the end of the tunnel. After the Penguins game, the Canucks face the Oilers who are in a freefall.
(14)---Los Angeles Kings--- So far the Kings have lost three of four games in the midst of a seven game home stand. The Kings look like there sliding, but have shown resilience so far throughout the year…so
don’t close the book on them just yet.
(15)---Ottawa Senators--- In his first game back from injury, Daniel Alfredsson scored a goal and added two helpers for Ottawa, who finds themselves in the middle of the pack in the playoff race in the East.
(16)---New York Rangers--- The Rangers are a playoff caliber team…but they need to win more games at Madison Square Garden. They are 10-11-4 there.
(17)---Atlanta Thrashers--- The dark cloud over this team is the Ilya Kovalchuk situation. Will he stay or will he go (possibly to the KHL??)
(18)---Philadelphia Flyers--- Philadelphia is finally starting to get hot. It’s probably too late for the division, but they could make a big push for the playoffs where they would not be an easy out.
(19)---Tampa Bay Lightning--- With a few good young players both on the NHL level and down in their system, Tampa is a team in transition. Right now, they are treading water but only four points out of a playoff spot.
(20)---Montreal Canadiens--- Montreal came into the season with dreams of a potential Stanley Cup run. Instead they are fighting for their playoff lives…and would be outside of the party if the season ended now.
(21)--- New York Islanders--- The Isles aren’t the most talented team, but they battle for every puck and play hard every night. Right now that would put them in the playoffs.
(22)---Dallas Stars--- Dallas might be trading their starting goalie in Marty Turco. What do you think they could get for him?
(23)---Florida Panthers--- With the least wins at home in the entire NHL (7-8-6), its hard to believe that the Panthers are still on the cusp of the playoffs.
(24)---Anaheim Ducks--- With Teemu Selanne out with a broken jaw and the other older stars on the team underperforming, the Ducks are struggling so far and you have to wonder what changes will be made near the trading deadline.
(25)---St. Louis Blues--- Last season, the Blues overcame a subpar start to make a mad dash to the playoffs, can they do it again? They are eight points out as of now…if they can cut the deficit to four by the Olympic break….stranger things have happened.
(26)---Minnesota Wild--- The Wild have spent the first half of the season or so searching for an identity. So far, they have fallen into being an average offensive team while being a below average defensive
team.
(27)---Columbus Blue Jackets--- Here is an example of a team who looks like they are going to be contenders for a playoff spot, only to crash down and see their season slip away.
(28)---Toronto Maple Leafs--- The Leafs have two main issues when it comes to their team this season. They can’t score…and they can’t stop the other team from scoring. That’s not going to win you many hockey games.
(29)---Carolina Hurricanes--- As bad as the Hurricanes have been this season, they have been competitive as of late getting points in six of their last ten games.
(30)---Edmonton Oilers--- Wow, what has happened to the Oilers? Now Sheldon Souray says he will waive his no-trade clause to “help the team”. Depending on what they can get for him…they should probably let him go if it means draft picks and an NHL caliber player or two.
