Fantasy Baseball Blog
Written by John Arias
Week 12 has arrived, and there are plenty of players yet to make an impact. To know who they are one must read this week’s Start/Sit for week 12.

Starting Pitcher in focus: John Lannan

Despite a 2-2 record, in his last six starts Lannan has an ERA of 2.68. During that span his WHIP is 1.19. In three starts in June, Lannan is 2-0, with a 1.16 ERA, and is holding opponents to a .167 batting average. He is scheduled to make two starts, and Fantasy owners should highly consider him for week 12.

Pitchers we love for week 12:  Javier Vazquez, Carlos Zambrano, Zack Greinke, Ryan Dempster, Edwin Jackson, John Danks, Max Scherzer, Tommy Hanson, Hiroki Kuroda, Brad Penny, Matt Palmer, and Trevor Cahill.

Starter to Avoid for week 12: Francisco Liriano

In his last six starts, Liriano is 0-4, with a 6.74 ERA. The Minnesota Twins travel to Milwaukee and St. Louis in week 12, where Liriano is 1-4, with a 6.43 ERA on the road. Fantasy owners should be cautious and not start Liriano for week 12.

Other Starters to Avoid for week 12: Aaron Cook, Chien-Ming Wang, Koji Uehara, Livan Hernandez, Todd Wellemeyer, Andrew Miller, and Jeff Suppan.

Position Players: Infielders

In his last 17 games, 1B Adam LaRoche is hitting .333, with two home runs, and 10 RBI. During that span, LaRoche has scored nine runs and has an OPS of .992. In week 12, the Pittsburgh Pirates will play all six of their games at home, where he is hitting .360.

In his last nine games, 2B Skip Schumaker is hitting .300, with three RBI, and has scored eight runs. The Cardinals will travel to New York, where Schumaker has thrived, hitting .429 against the Mets this season.

SS Cristian Guzman is continuing to play very well. In 17 games in June, he has one home run, with three RBI, and is hitting .338. He is a recommended start for week 12.

3B Ian Stewart has had a month to remember. Over his last 18 games, he has six home runs, with 17 RBI, and is hitting .317. Fantasy owners looking for power production and multiple position eligibility, should consider him for week 12.

Other Infielders to Consider: Casey Blake, Kendry Morales.

Infielder to Avoid: Chris Davis

In May, despite hitting .189, he had seven home runs, with 14 RBI. In June, all of his production has fallen off. In 16 games, he only has one home run, with five RBI. His OPS is a dreadful .598, and is not a recommended start for week 12.

Outfielders:

OF Scott Podsednik is having a great month of June. In 19 games, he is hitting .329, with two home runs, eight RBI, and seven steals. His OPS in June is .854, and has scored 10 runs. A great AL-only start, and he should be considered in deeper mixed leagues.

Over his last 14 games OF Marcus Thames has been on fire. He is hitting .366, with five home runs, and 10 RBI. His OPS in June is a remarkable 1.180; he is starting to get regular at-bats as the teams DH, and is a great option for week 12.

OF Juan L. Rivera has been playing his best baseball in June. Since the start of June, he has five home runs, with 17 RBI, and is hitting .317. His OPS in June is 1.004, and is a recommended start in week 12.

Other Outfielders to Consider: Andrew McCutchen, Cody Ross, Scott Hairston

Outfielder to Avoid in week 12: Kosuke Fukudome

In a midst of a 0 for 22 slump before Sunday, Fukudome has had a month to forget. In his last 14 games, he is hitting .187, with no home runs, and only two RBI. He is a definite player that should be on the bench for week 12.

Catchers: Matt Wieters

Patient owners are starting to be rewarded with the play of the rookie. In his last six games, he is hitting .304, with one home run, and four RBI. Needless to say, he is a great start for week 12.

Catcher to Avoid: Gerald Laird

Relief Pitchers: J.P. Howell

In his last 10 appearances, he has not allowed a run, and has lowered his ERA from 2.63 to 1.87. Over that span, Howell has two wins, with three saves, and is holding opponents on the season to a batting average of .197. It is only a matter of time until; he is given the closer job.

Relief Pitcher to Avoid: Frank Francisco
