Trade Deadline Predictions - Pitchers PDF Print E-mail
Rumor Central

In the past few weeks we’ve really gotten into the heart of some good rumors, although none have gone through yet (and won’t until at least a month from now) but injuries are really starting to affect the trade market.  Originally we thought that multiple solid starting pitchers would be on the block including Jake Peavy, Erik Bedard, Roy Oswalt, Ian Snell, Jarrod Washburn, Brad Penny, and maybe even Roy Halladay.

The trade deadline is always important in fantasy leagues because of park factors, players moving from the NL to the AL (or vice-versa), and many other factors that add up.  Each of the previously mentioned pitchers has been in multiple trade rumors so far this season so I am here to bring the latest on each of them.

Jake Peavy
(Padres) – Peavy was the featured product in a deal that would have sent him from San Diego to the Chicago White Sox, but decided to use his no-trade clause.  Since then he’s been placed on the 15-day DL due to a strained tendon in his right ankle, but will apparently miss most of the season.  Peavy will NOT be dealt in 2009.

Erik Bedard
(Mariners) – It looked like Bedard could end up in a Milwaukee Brewers or Philadelphia Phillies uniform by August 1, but now he has suffered shoulder inflammation and has been placed on the DL.  Unless Bedard comes back ASAP and is able to dominate hitters, his chances of getting traded have taken a hit.  It is UNLIKELY that he is dealt this year.

Roy Oswalt
(Astros) – Owner Drayton McLane Jr., has publically announced that he plans on the Houston Astros to build from within the organization (which is pretty bare and ranked last in the MLB in Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook) which really took a hit to the chances of a trade.  Rumors surfaced that Oswalt would deny a trade to the White Sox just as his good friend Peavy did, which means he wants to stay in the NL.  It is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that Oswalt is dealt in 2009.

Roy Halladay (Blue Jays) – The Toronto Blue Jays have had by far the worst luck staying healthy this year, especially when looking at their pitching staff.  Halladay is the most recent guy to catch the injury bug and was placed on the 15-day DL yesterday.  Unless Toronto really slides in the next two weeks, but somehow their young pitchers prove worthy of jobs in the rotation, Halladay will NOT be dealt in 2009.

Ian Snell (Pirates) – Snell has been rumored to be a future Colorado Rockie, especially since the Pirates already appear to be sellers in 2009.  His chances increased when he criticized manager John Russell’s tactics this past weekend.  New Rockies manager Jim Tracy has managed Snell before, and it makes sense that he would like to bring him in for the playoff push.  It appears that Snell is LIKELY to be traded in 2009, and the Rockies are the top
fit.

Jarrod Washburn (Mariners) – Peter Gammons of ESPN feels that many teams could really use Washburn, and now that the Mariners have lost Bedard to injury, he could be the first man headed out of town.  The M’s have a few young pitchers that have shown promise this year, including Felix Hernandez, and if the price is right, Washburn may be headed out of town.  There have been rumors of Washburn heading to Milwaukee, which has heated up since Manny Parra was sent to Triple-A Nashville.  Until we know more about what teams are willing to offer, this is a NO DECISION for now.

Brad Penny (Red Sox) – Penny’s name has been in more rumors than any of the previously mentioned pitchers after signing with the Boston Red Sox this past off-season.  Thanks to Bedard, Halladay, and Peavy all suffering injuries, the demand for starting pitching is going to increase, and Penny is the most likely candidate to be on the move.  There were rumors of Penny going to Milwaukee in exchange for J.J. Hardy, which would allow the Brewers to bring up top prospect Alcides Escobar.  I believe that Penny WILL BE DEALT in 2009.

Which of these pitchers do you feel is the most likely to be dealt this year?  Who will the biggest name dealt at the deadline?
