Top 10 Fantasy Players Who Switched Teams for 2009 PDF  | Print |  E-mail
FP911's Top Ten
Written by Brian Joura
One month into the season, let's take a look and see who are the top players that switched teams in the off-season.  While many of these players were expected to be on this list, there are no shortage of surprises, either.  And some of the free agents who took the longest to sign (and did not receive the big deals they hoped for) have definitely produced the most bang for the buck in April.
While this list will undoubtedly change over the next five months, here are the Top 10 Fantasy Players Who Switched Teams for 2009.

10. Felipe Lopez – Nationals/Cardinals to Diamondbacks

After making just under five million in his last year of arbitration in 2008, F-Lop signed a one-year deal for $3.5 million in December with the Diamondbacks to replace Orlando Hudson as the team's second baseman.  Although he's been somewhat obscured by Hudson's fast start, Lopez has been quite a pleasant surprise so far for Arizona.  He has settled into the leadoff role and looks to have his best season since 2005, when he hit 23 HR and drove in 85 runs for the Reds.

9. Endy Chavez – Mets to Mariners

Who would have guessed that the biggest impact from the three-team, 12-player deal in December would by Endy Chavez?  A tremendous defensive player, Chavez is also contributing with the bat so far for Seattle.  While it's unlikely that the average will stay above .300, Chavez seems destined for his best season in steals since he stole 32 bases for the Expos in 2004.

8. Francisco Rodriguez – Angels to Mets

A lot of people were scared of Rodriguez because of his declining peripherals.  Meanwhile in 2009 his average fastball velocity is a full mph above where it was last year and his K/9 sits at 13.03 so far.  Yes, he still walks more than you would like, but his WHIP checks in at 1.03 so no one should be too upset. Rodriguez is perfect in five save opportunities while his replacement in Anaheim has already blown two saves and carries a 7.88 ERA.

7. Emilio Bonifacio – Diamondbacks/Nationals to Marlins

OK, he is not going to be on this list at the end of the year.  But let us not begrudge him his blistering first week of the season.  The speed has been every bit as good as promised and he does hit his fair share of line drives.  If the hits fall in and he contributes in average, then Bonifacio will be an acceptable fantasy performer.

6. Adam Dunn – Reds/Diamondbacks to Nationals

Before the season, Mike Podhorzer made a tongue-in-cheek prediction that Adam Dunn would not finish with 40 HR this year, as he has in the previous four seasons.  But he's right on pace for that, having his six homers in the first month of 2009.  And those have been evenly split between home and road games.  Many feared that moving from the good hitting parks he played in last year would curtail his power but early results have not backed up that concern.

5. Mark DeRosa – Cubs to Indians

I wonder if Jim Hendry had it to do all over again if he would keep DeRosa instead of signing Milton Bradley.  DeRosa is cheaper, more durable, more versatile and so far much more productive fantasy-wise than Bradley.  There's a chance for even better once he starts getting a few singles to fall in to pump up his average.

4. Russ Branyan – Brewers to Mariners

Given a chance to play full-time for the first time in his career, Branyan seems certain to shatter his season high of 24 HR and 50 RBIs.  No one is surprised by the power but that .385 BABIP, which has led to a .333 AVG has certainly caught everyone off guard.  Nearly half of his plate appearances have been one of the three true outcomes (BB, K, HR) but this is below his career average.  The reason for this leads to my favorite Branyan stat.  He currently has a 26.7 percent K%, which would easily be the lowest mark of his career.

3. Orlando Hudson – Diamondbacks to Dodgers

Whether it is hitting for average or power or stealing bases, Hudson is doing everything you want a fantasy player to do.  It is a tough one for me to write, as I was one of his biggest critics this off-season. Here's hoping that he can stay on the field for 150 games for the second time in his career and that the O-Dog carries his hot hitting from April all the way to September.

2. Bobby Abreu – Yankees to Angels

It seemed like the Angels' outfield situation was crowded enough even before adding Abreu late in the off-season.  It just goes to show that it's always a good idea to add good players to the roster, especially when they come at the bargain-basement price of $5 million like Abreu did.  But the big white elephant in the room is Abreu's .057 ISO.  It's certainly good to see him running again this much; it would be nice to see him hit a ball over the fence.

1. Raul Ibanez – Mariners to Phillies

It is no surprise that Ibanez is hitting this well.  He is a streaky hitter and last August he hit like Babe Ruth, too, just like he did in April.  No, the thing that really surprises me is that Ibanez has played so well in the field.  After back-to-back seasons of double-digit negative UZR/150, Ibanez has a pro-rated mark in the category that would give him a plus 12.2

Make sure to click on the Raul Ibanez picture. It is a short video of him in action defensively. Also check to see the look of the other fielder (Ichiro?) who looks as if he's seen this once too often...
