Top 10 Beatles Songs and Baseball Players PDF  | Print |  E-mail
FP911's Top Ten
Written by Brian Joura

The two constants throughout my life have been my love for baseball and my passion for The Beatles. So it hardly seems a Revolution to stop thinking about the Taxman, quit being a Bad Boy, Act Naturally and produce a Top 10 list merging these two subjects.

And The Beatles have a connection with baseball. Former A’s owner Charlie Finley paid them a then-record sum of $150,000 to play a concert in Kansas City in 1964. Finley’s daughter was a Beatles fan and he paid the group six times their normal amount to get them to give up a scheduled day off during their first American tour. In honor of the new stop, The Beatles added the R&B classic Kansas City to their set list for the show and included the song on their next album.

10. Get Back – Ryan Dempster

Most of the free agent pitchers opted for greener pastures elsewhere, like C.C. Sabathia and A.J. Burnett. But Ryan Dempster opted to return to Chicago, where he was an All-Star in 2008. Dempster probably took a below-market deal, as his average annual salary of $13 million barely exceeded Oliver Perez’ $12 million, and Perez was clearly not the Mets’ first choice. At the end of the song Get Back, there is a spoken piece by John Lennon, who addressed the crowd on the roof where the song was recorded and said, “I hope we passed the audition!” Clearly, the Cubs believe that Dempster passed his.

9.  Run For Your Life – Willy Taveras

Willy Taveras has one redeeming quality for fantasy players and that is he led the majors with 68 stolen bases last year. When you don’t hit for a high average and you have no power, you better run for your life. There’s not a lot of redeeming qualities in the song, either. The Beatles were known for their songs about peace and love and in this one Lennon snarls, “I’d rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man.” Even the greats make mistakes, which is a good thing to keep in mind if you wind up with Taveras on your team.

8. Can’t Buy Me Love – Tim Wakefield

One of the most famous lines in pop music history comes in the chorus of this song, where Paul McCartney belts out, “I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love!” Tim Wakefield has a $4 million rolling contract extension, which allows the Red Sox to keep him as long as they wish at that salary. This year will be Wakefield’s 15th with Boston, easily the longest-tenured player on the club. I find it odd that the Players’ Association allows this contract to exist. It is almost as if Wakefield is single handedly trying to re-instate the reserve clause.

7. Ticket To Ride – Mark Teixeira

In the song, Lennon laments the girl who is leaving him behind with absolutely no remorse. “Before she gets to saying goodbye, she ought to think twice, she ought to do right by me.” Just how many teams has Mark Teixeira left behind? The Rangers didn’t think they could keep him, so they sent him to Atlanta, where he went to college. The Braves didn’t think they could keep him, so they sent him to the Angels. The Halos tried their best to keep him, but he left without too many tears. The Orioles, Nationals and Red Sox all extended large offers, which Teixeira seemingly had no trouble turning down. So this year, when Mark Teixeira strides to the plate in pinstripes, think of him for what he really is – the stuck-up girl who thought she was too good for everyone else.

6. Hello Goodbye – Brandon Backe

McCartney’s song about trying to see the positive side in all situations also applies to what major league hitters think when Brandon Backe is on the mound. As the hitters eagerly say hello when they see him on the mound, Backe is left to turn his back and bid a fond adieu as yet another home run flies over the wall. Houston’s starter led the majors with 36 gopher balls in 2008. That’s a lot of goodbyes.

5. Good Day Sunshine – Jermaine Dye

It is a testament to how talented The Beatles were that this radio-friendly, hook-driven song by McCartney was never even released as a single. Meanwhile, the White Sox are looking for a release from Jermaine Dye’s contract, which seems insane, especially when you consider that he put up a .349/.402/.737 line with 18 HR and 47 RBIs in 204 plate appearances in day games last year. His career OPS in the sunshine is .895, compared to an .829 mark overall. Somebody get the Cubs on the line!

4. I’m a Loser – Aaron Harang

It is important to recognize the significance of this song, in which Lennon verbalizes how Bealtemania is wearing thin. “Although I laugh and I act like a clown, beneath this mask I am wearing a frown.” But no song in the group’s catalog lends itself to baseball like this one. And Aaron Harang tied for the major league lead, as he left the mound a loser 17 times last year. Since Harang had fewer wins than the other two guys, he is the biggest loser.

3. Nowhere Man – Bobby Abreu

This could have easily been Adam Dunn, but somehow Bobby Abreu fits better. Maybe it is because he has a sad kind of face and it has got to be a lonely thing still being a free agent as we hit the second week of February. “He’s a real Nowhere Man, sitting in his Nowhere Land, making all his nowhere plans, for nobody.” This song is featured in the movie “Yellow Submarine” and one of the visuals is Jeremy, the Nowhere Man, sitting on a record that spins aimlessly around. I hope Abreu finds a new direction soon, as he’s a key member of my dynasty league.

2. Help! – Francisco Rodriguez

There was no team whose bullpen cried for help more than the Mets last year. The Mets would have won the National League East by six games in 2008 if the game ended after eight innings. Meanwhile, Francisco Rodriguez established a single-season record with 62 saves. “Help me if you can I’m feeling down, And I do appreciate you being round, Help me get my feet back on the ground, Won’t you please, please help me?” Who knew Lennon was a Mets fan?

1. The Long and Winding Road – Manny Ramirez

Perhaps no song in The Beatles’ catalog had more drama than this one. McCartney was furious that Phil Spector added strings and schmaltz to this song without his approval and while the band was on its last legs at the time regardless, this certainly didn’t help matters any. One of the highlights of any McCartney concert is this song, which he seemingly goes to great lengths to nail live and perform it the way it was meant to be. And now with the “Let it Be Naked” album, we can hear it that way anytime. The king of baseball drama is Manny Ramirez and hopefully his long and winding road will lead him to a place where he is happy and he can continue being one of the best righty hitters in the history of the game.

What is your favorite Beatles song and is there a player with whom you can associate the tune?

The Beatles sang one of my Favorites,"Till There Was You"
Dedicated to Ryan Church and his concussions:
There were bells on the hill
But I never heard them ringing,
No, I never heard them at all
Till there was you.

There were birds in the sky
But I never saw them winging
No, I never saw them at all
Till there was you.

You know, when I was writing this I thought about the song but I was thinking Jose Canseco and decided I wanted it to be only about active guys.

In light of the news of the past 24 hours, I think that you could possibly consider adding, "Get by with a Little Help from my Friends" dedicated to A-Rod?
