The past couple of months Joe Lano and I have been writing articles to help prepare you for your drafts and upcoming leagues, so I have decided to write one last article on drafting to wrap it all up and put it together as one package. As many of you know, mock drafts can really help you prepare for your real draft, as long as they are in the same format and feature similar rankings.  More important than mock drafts though, is to make your own rankings list.  You do not have to sit around and hand write everything, in fact, you can even just group guys in tiers which is often very effective.

By grouping players in tiers, you are able to get a better judgment of the quality of players that are still available at each position and it allows you to easily keep track of players that have been drafted.

As Lenny Melnick suggests in his “Control the Draft” strategy, go through the rankings and make teams that you would like to get, or of players that you are targeting for draft day.  Then take your roster and add up the stats and see how you compare to the typical league averages.

It is important when drafting in any roto league, head to head or 5x5, that you are always aware of where you are in each category.  The projections on Mock Draft Central are a good benchmark for these kinds of things, but keep in mind, unless you are drafting on MDC, it is unlikely that you will be able to view projections mid-draft.

If you are in an auction league, beware of Ryan Braun.  And no, I'm not referring to the Brewers slugger, rather the White Sox reliever.  Every league has its pranksters and their favorite prank is typically nominating the pitcher hoping others mistake him for the hitter.

I always keep a sheet handy at drafts; one side features the top 25 players in each hitting category in 2008 and the other side does the same for pitching.  This helps to find certain producers in different categories late in your drafts.

When drafting, do not try to do anything too radical if you have not tried it before, like waiting until your last nine picks to draft pitchers.  You have to remain confident in yourself and the draft strategies that you have developed throughout the off-season.

The reason that hitters typically go before pitchers is because pitchers are statistically more inconsistent year in and year out compared to hitters.  Over 50% of pitchers that win 15 games one year typically do not reach that mark the year after.

Keep current on the latest news leading up the draft, as injuries are very important in drafts.  It is vital to pay attention to rumors and news so that you have a leg up on the competition.

Making yourself familiar with all of the players is very important when draft day comes around.  If there are some players that you are unfamiliar with and want some help with, do not hesitate to e-mail us.  I am always taking e-mails at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Listening to the radio shows over at blogtalkradio.com and reading many of the articles on FantasyPros911.com are great ways to stay interactive with other readers and to help gain a better knowledge of undervalued players.

Most importantly, make sure that you have fun when drafting and participating in your league.  It is our goal to help you dominate your league so do not hesitate to let us know how we can help!
