The Big Unit's Bones Are Creaky And Wang Sucks PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Woman's Lip
Written by Sooze

Randy Johnson is one of those guys with a voice so booming that when he tells a joke, it rarely gets more than a courtesy chuckle.  However, Tuesday night he managed to make a funny regarding his recent accident at the plate.

"Obviously the first thing I thought is that I won’t be able to do my instructional hitting video," he joked.

zing!

Nice pose, Randy.Johnson (8-6 with a 4.81 ERA) injured himself while batting (a risk all fantasy players take when drafting National League pitchers) during the San Francisco Giants' 7-1 loss to the Houston Astros on July 5th.  He pretty much immediately landed on the disabled list with a torn rotator cuff, but will avoid the risk of surgery for now and just keep working out with the team to try strengthening the muscles in his pitching shoulder.

Here's the good news for all of you Big Unit owners out there: oh wait, there really isn't any.  Even though he's seen "significant improvement" over the last few weeks in the condition of his shoulder (according to him), he likely won't be seeing the mound until as late as September, but at the very least, for the next three weeks.  This injury is new territory for Johnson, who will turn 46 in September, as he's mostly dealt with back and knee problems in the past. These things tend to happen when you head on over the hill.

In other injury-related news around the league, Chien-Ming Wang (the butt of many a joke this season and always) has decided to put New York Yankees fans out of their misery after watching him suck all season long.

Nice duds, Wang. The right-hander, who has struggled all year with control issues and injuries, has decided to undergo arthroscopic surgery which will put an end to his horrid season.

There isn't a timetable yet for his return to the big leagues, but Yanks manager Joe Girardi says the team will know more once he's had the procedure done.

Remember when Wang co-led the American League in wins in 2006 with Johan Santana, then enjoyed another 19-win season in 2007?  After that he missed the last 3 1/2 months of 2008 when he hurt his foot running the bases.  That's about when his problems began.  He’s sitting at 1-6 with an unsightly 9.64 ERA (actually a giant drop from April) in just 12 games this season, missing a month early on with a bruised ego, er... hip injury.

However, Wang's problems won't affect any of you at this point.  At least, I hope he's not hanging around any of your fantasy teams.  And if you drafted him this season, your stats took a major hit on the 18th of April when he imploded on the hill vs. the Cleveland Indians for seven runs in the first inning and ballooned his ERA to 34.50.  Hopefully you ditched him then, because he went on to surrender two runs on six hits over just three innings in his next start, and didn't last longer than four innings in each start thereafter until his most recent outing on July 7th... where he managed to stay in the game for one out into the fifth, just to give up four runs on six hits.

Biggest.  Sucking sound.  Ever.
