| When you think about the best pitchers in the National League the name Theodore Roosevelt Lilly is usually not one that comes to mind. But you can’t argue with the numbers. Since coming over to the Cubs, Ted Lilly has been about as good as you could ask for. Among NL pitchers, only Brandon Webb has more wins (40) in the last two seasons than Lilly (32). He has posted back to back seasons of 174 K (2007) and 184 K (2008). He has also maintained respectable ERA and WHIP numbers in that time. Yet when people talk about pitchers that they are targeting in drafts you rarely hear them say they want Ted Lilly on their team. Many people questioned the Cubs’ signing of Lilly as a free-agent in 2007. A classic underachiever in his AL days, Lilly was now expected to help lead the Cubs to the postseason. Chicagoans were especially boggled by the signing. However, the deal made a lot of sense. Many times it seemed that Lilly was on the verge of putting it all together but the occasional meltdown would quickly halt any progression. It seemed that a change of leagues would be the best thing for him…and it was. 2008 Season  Lilly turned a lot of heads with a very productive season in 2007. But last season he got off to a dreadful start. April was a complete nightmare for Lilly. In his first four starts of the season he allowed 19 ER in 16.2 IP and finished the month with a 6.43 ERA. For the most part, he settled down after April, posting a 3.72 ERA for the rest of the season. He was particularly good down the stretch in which he had ERAs of 3.35 in August and 3.30 in September.His 17 W last season tied for third best in the NL and his 184 K ranked tenth best. He also had a very respectable 1.23 WHIP and went over 200 IP for the second straight year. He finished ‘08 with a 4.09 ERA but if it weren’t for the horrendous April it would have been much better. Overall, Lilly backed up a solid 2007 season with another one in ‘08. Although Lilly ended up with another solid season there were some glitches along the way. Lilly also tied for third in the NL in HR allowed with 32. During one stretch he allowed 11 HR in 8 games. Sometimes it seems as if all of his earned runs are a result of homeruns. He also had another season with a BB/9 of nearly 3.0. The worst possible combination to have is a high BB rate and a high HR rate but Lilly has managed to limit the damage when he gets himself in trouble. When it came time for the postseason series against the Dodgers, Lilly was nowhere to be found. Lou Piniella had a rotation set up of Ryan Dempster, Carlos Zambrano, Rich Harden and “maybe” Ted Lilly in Game 4. Well, we know how that went and Lilly was completely left out of the playoffs. Many people in Chicagoland wanted Lilly to start Game 1 but Piniella decided to go with Ryan Dempster who decided to fall apart at the worst possible moment. Analysis and Looking Ahead It’s still arguable as to whether or not he’s the best pitcher on his team for 2009. Let’s take a look: Carlos Zambrano’s numbers have been on a steep decline the last two seasons, Ryan Dempster will have a hard time repeating his ’08 season, and Rich Harden is always one game away from landing on the DL. Meanwhile Lilly has been a model of consistency since putting on a Cubs uniform. While he may no longer sport the 90 MPH fastball (around 87-89 MPH now), he’s become quite the crafty pitcher. He has become a master of changing speeds. He keeps hitters off-balance with a big, slow curveball and he has utilized his changeup more. His problems occur in the first three innings of the game. If he gets off to a bad start he tends to let it bother him too much which only compounds the bad situation. If he can get passed the first three innings in good shape then it usually turns into a quality outing. There’s no reason to believe that Lilly will not have another solid season for the Cubs. Yet his draft status thus far does not reflect a tremendous amount of respect for the veteran lefty. His current ADP of 198.7 ranks behind the likes of Aaron Cook, Joe Saunders, Justin Duchscherer, Randy Johnson and Jair Jurrjens. Clearly this is a result of amateurs not knowing any better. However, in a recent expert mock draft Lilly was selected after pitchers such as Matt Garza, Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer, Ben Sheets, and Brett Myers. These are all pitchers who are either unproven or have been out-performed by Lilly. Clearly, Ted Lilly has earned the title of Mr. Unappreciated.
