March Madness is upon us, but to baseball fans that means more than just basketball; Opening Day is right around the corner! There’s been quite a few transactions taking place in the past few days including some of the few remaining free agents signing and some surprising demotions for a few veterans.
General News The Washington Nationals have signed free agent pitcher Joe Beimel to pitch out of the bullpen this year; to clear space for him on the roster, the Nats released injury plagued pitcher Shawn Hill. Dayan Viciedo was sent down to the minors by the Chicago White Sox front office in order for him to get in shape and gain more experience. Viciedo has a promising future and lots of power potential, but has only experienced a limited amount of professional plate appearances, all of which have taken place in Cuba. Sidney Ponson was signed to a Minor League deal with the Kansas City Royals and will attempt to fight for the 5th starter spot. Ponson was spectacular in the World Baseball Classic for the Netherlands. The Royals have also released pitcher Jimmy Gobble. Derrek Lee may be joining Team USA after Kevin Youkilis left the team with a left ankle sprain. Lee has been suffering from a sore right quad, but feels that he’ll be able to play in the next day or two. The Cincinnati Reds are likely to offer former top prospect Homer Bailey a spot in the bullpen after Micah Owings has outpitched him in the spring thus far in an effort to win the 5th starter spot. Pitcher Tom Gorzelanny was sent down to Triple-A today by the Pittsburgh Pirates after suffering form a disappointing spring thus far. Jeff Karstens and Virgil Vasquez will now battle for the last spot in the rotation. It appears that Texas Rangers pitcher Brandon McCarthy has locked up a rotation spot after continuing to post good numbers in the spring; he threw four no-hit innings yesterday. Evan Longoria has publically announced that if Team USA needs his help in the next round of the WBC that he will gladly join the squad. The Chicago Cubs will retire the number 31 in honor of Greg Maddux and Ferguson Jenkins on May 3rd at Wrigley Field. Injury News Cleveland Indians pitcher Adam Miller is scheduled to have surgery on his middle finger on his right hand, and this procedure could end his career unless he figures out a way to work around it. Tim Lincecum was roughed up by the Cubs today, but it’s important to point out that an injury was not the reason, rather it was bronchitis. Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui will be limited to a DH role until June while he recovers from knee surgery. Matsui’s fantasy value is fairly low this year, but gambling on him late isn’t the worst idea. B.J. Upton may be back for Opening Day after all; Upton has begun playing the field and will begin hitting regularly. If he does play, it will be in colder weather for the first two weeks of the season so be cautious, but he should be fine after that time. Doug Davis pitched another solid game yesterday in his return from left bicep soreness which kept him from making his last start. Houston Astros infielder Aaron Boone will be forced to have open heart surgery, which may end his career. That’s all of the biggest and latest news from the past few days.
