Quite a few rumors and injury speculations this week, so let’s get it on:
-Rumors are floating around that the Atlanta Braves are currently shopping outfielder Jeff Francoeur in an attempt to upgrade their outfield. Reports state that the Boston Red Sox have been scouting Francoeur, and that the Kansas City Royals would be good suitors, considering Dayton Moore’s history with Francoeur. Moore, a former Braves front office member, was with the team when Francoeur was an up and coming prospect; Jose Guillen or David DeJesus may be on the move. -The Seattle Mariners have been searching for a catcher, with Kenji Johjima slated to miss six to eight weeks with a broken big toe. The team called up Guillermo Quiroz as a temporary replacement, but they would prefer to acquire a more consistent catcher. Jeff Clement, who many expected to be the backup catcher for the M’s this year, has been suffering from a bruised knee which has limited him to being a designated hitter in the minor leagues. -The Pittsburgh Pirates are the favorites to land hot 16-year-old Dominican prospect Miguel Angel Sano. The quick shortstop has been rumored to go to the Pirates for some time now, but a recent meeting with the Pirates Latin American scouting director Rene Gayo has solidified the rumors. -Although Matt Capps underwent x-rays on his hand after being struck by a Geovany Soto line drive, and the initial reports were that he would just miss a couple of days, it now appears that he may be headed to the Disabled List. John Grabow and Sean Burnett are the likely candidates to fill Capps' vacancy if he will be out for an extended period of time. -The Pirates have also been shopping some of their veteran players who will be free agents after the 2009 season. The players include Jack Wilson, Adam LaRoche, and John Grabow. I believe that the Pirates would like Grabow to get the closer's role for a period of time to display him for other teams to boost his value. -Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe believes that Brad Penny will be dealt from the Boston Red Sox by the trading deadline this year, however, since Penny was signed as a free agent, he cannot be traded until June 15. The Red Sox currently have John Smoltz rehabbing in the minor leagues and Clay Buchholz throwing in Triple-A Pawtucket. The Miami Herald believes that the Florida Marlins may be his new home. However, they may not be able to afford his hefty salary, so do not put much stock in this one just yet.. -Detroit Tigers outfielder Carlos Guillen is currently in the process of rehabbing a shoulder injury, but his rehab has been slowed down due to many moments of discomfort. It does not appear that Guillen will be back in the next week or two, considering at this point in time he still is not throwing or swinging. -Marlins second baseman Dan Uggla may be the on the move as we have expected for some time now, this time to the San Francisco Giants. With Chris Coghlan and Emilio Bonifacio both qualified to play quality defense at second base, and the Giants lacking offense, the move would be a perfect fit. The Sun Sentinel believes that the Giants will have to deal either Jonathan Sanchez or Matt Cain to acquire the 2008 All-Star second baseman. In December, during the Winter Meetings, rumors were swirling that Jorge Cantu could have been dealt for Sanchez, but Uggla is now the more likely candidate. This rumor seems very unlikely to happen-there is no way the Giants are trading Matt Cain for a 29 year old second baseman with a much larger salary, so it could be Sanchez. -The Cleveland Indians could be a very active team near the trading deadline this year with a below-average pitching staff and a slew of slumping hitters. Speculation has been that Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez may be on the move, but there have not been any confirmed talks of them shifting teams just yet. I decided to make the column more “rumory” this week, so let me know your thoughts in the comments section below. Who do you feel the best player will be traded at this year’s deadline will be? Will the Cleveland Indians deal Victor Martinez and/or Cliff Lee? Trackback(0)
