Fantasy baseball owners are always captivated by rookie baseball players and end up drafting them higher than their ADP, but sometimes the youngsters really pan out. This week is part of a series where we will check in on some of the rookies drafted in this year’s drafts to see why some worked and some have not. Last week we covered David Price, Matt Wieters, and Travis Snider. This week we feature a few other American League rookies that demanded attention in drafts this year:
Elvis Andrus (Rangers): This speedy shortstop drew a lot of attention for his ability to steal bases, but was able to earn a starting spot due to his range and soft hands. His arrival at the major league level forced Rawlings Gold Glove winner Michael Young to third base, in a move that surprised many, but has undergone a smooth transition. Not many people expected his batting average to be very high (currently .266), however, he has managed to steal 11 bases. The three home runs have been a bonus, but the biggest benefit that Andrus has provided is a defensive upgrade to help out his pitching staff. Matt LaPorta (Indians): LaPorta was the centerpiece of 2008’s deal between the Milwaukee Brewers and Cleveland Indians that put CC Sabathia in a Brew Crew uniform. Although he’s been having a solid season for Triple-A Columbus (.302 AVG, 8 HR, 27 RBI), he has been less than impressive in his time in the majors. His .190 AVG in 42 at-bats this year is pathetic; however, he will likely get more at-bats as the season rolls on. It is very likely that LaPorta comes up, at least in September, but 2010 will be his time to shine as a young gun. Chris Getz/Gordon Beckham (White Sox): Getz did not pick up steam until the very end of Spring Training, when it was announced that he would be the starting second baseman. While he has been okay in the field so far, his .250 AVG has been a disappointment. The nine stolen bases are a plus, but only in deeper leagues where middle infielders are at a premium. Beckham started the season in Double-A Birmingham and made a quick transition to Triple-A Charlotte. It is not his fault that he’s been stuck in the eight-hole in the White Sox lineup since his call-up in early June, but so far he’s struggled against Major League pitching. Both of these guys are very young and will be two vital parts to the White Sox success years down the road, but it appears they have work to do. Next week we’ll cover some more hyped NL prospects, but in the mean time, let the FP911 community know your thoughts about these guys below. Which ones will live up to their ADP? Which prospect are you most excited about? Trackback(0)
