Fantasy Baseball Beginners
Written by Kevin Orris
Fantasy baseball owners are always captivated by rookie baseball players and end up drafting them higher than their ADP, but sometimes the youngsters really pan out.  This week is the first part of a series where we’ll check in on some of the rookies drafted in this year’s drafts to see why some worked and some haven’t.  The following are a few of the hyped rookies in the American League.

altMatt Wieters
(Orioles) – Wieters had an ADP of 133 which is pretty high for a rookie, much less any catcher.  Many, including our own Patrick DiCaprio, had high hopes for the switch hitting backstop.  Wieters got the call up on May 29th, but until this point has been a disappointment fantasy wise.  There is still a lot of the season to go, but he has to start hitting to remain on single-season league rosters.  Expect big things in the future, but his 2009 ADP is going to be hard to justify.

Travis Snider (Blue Jays) – Everyone, including myself, was hoping for the best for Snider in 2009, but so far, he has been a disappointment.  It is hard to blame him since he was mistreated in Toronto being stuck near the bottom of the order denying him good pitches and the opportunity to drive in runs.  He’s currently racking up at-bats in Triple-A Las Vegas, as in the majors he hit .242 with three home runs and 12 RBIs.  His 303 ADP is not as crazy as Wieters', but he still has work to do to live up to that spot.

David Price
(Rays) – The 2007 1st overall pick was impressive in a short stint with the Rays in 2008 and into the playoffs, but has yet to log enough innings this year to make a big impact.  The 2.37 ERA is solid, but the 1.63 WHIP is a bit of an eyesore.  Price has been striking out batters at a record rate, but needs to tone down the walks.  Price was drafted with a 147 ADP and by season’s end he should live up to that, however, for now, he’s got to keep runners off the paths.

Next week we’ll cover some more hyped AL prospects, but in the mean time, let the FP911 community know your thoughts about these guys below.  Which ones will live up to their ADP?  Which prospect are you most excited about?
