Questions in the Outfield after Week 1 PDF Print E-mail
Roaming The Outfield

Sean takes us around the outfields second guessing the managers and telling them how it should be.
After a week has passed since Washington National’s manager, Manny Acta, decided to start Austin Kearns in right field on opening day over Elijah Dukes, the few DC faithful and many a fantasy owner are hoping he will come to his senses soon.  Austin Kearns has been a completely average major league outfielder.  Lastings Milledge has not done much better in centerfield but at least he is still young and still has upside, though we will have to wait on him as he was unbelievably sent to AAA.  Adam Dunn has not been outstanding in left field during week one but at least he does have an on base percentage over .500.  Elijah Dukes is who everyone wants to see.  There even is a local Nat commercial encouraging fans to come out to the park to see Dukes, not Kearns.  Dukes and Dunn are the only National outfielders that had multi hit games during week one. There is no reason they both should not be playing.  Unfortunately I think Manny Acta thinks it is 2008 again, when he said that Kearns was the only person on his team that allowed him to sleep at night. In other words Kearns is steady.  Unfortunately, the Nationals need a lot more than steady this year.  Will Manny see the light and let us see more of Dukes and less of Kearns?

Next stop Cincinnati, where we find Dusty Baker sitting Chris Dickerson for most of the week.  The Reds faced three lefties last week so Dickerson sat.  I will never understand why so many young players get platooned.  How are they supposed to improve their skills if they don’t get the chance to even see pitches from the other side?  Another youngster, Darnell McDonald, has been getting many of the lefty at bats and doing quite well.  Wouldn’t it make more sense to let one of these guys develop their skills and get full playing time?

On to the Big Apple, what should Girardi do with the Yankee outfielder?  Personally I have Brett Gardner in a few leagues but why is he playing?  It seems to me that Nick Swisher and Johnny Damon playing center and left field with Xavier Nady in right field makes more sense.  In the Mets' outfield do we really expect to see Gary Sheffield playing at some point this season? I can’t see a reason so far. Let’s hope Jerry Manuel agrees.

The Orioles have discovered they have two thirds of a great outfield with Nick Markakis and Adam Jones.  Unfortunately, there is no good solution for the Luke Scott, Felix Pie, Ty Wigginton left field/DH fiasco.

Texas had hoped David Murphy would do better than he did this spring, instead he is doing worse.  If this keeps up expect Marlon Byrd to be getting many more at bats in the coming weeks.  While we are in Texas, it was interesting to hear Chris Davis say he was looking forward to playing night games on Monday after four straight day games. Supposedly Davis thinks he plays better at night.  Maybe he should just wear better shades during the day games?

In Pittsburgh, it looks like Nyjer Morgan is off to a hot start and making the most of his opportunity. So why wait for Andrew McCutchen until May or June? I don’t see Brandon Moss as the solution.

Want to tee off on some other outfields?  I know a few of you feel pretty strongly about the situation in Arizona with Justin Upton.  What are your thoughts about Colorado with Dexter Fowler being kept on the major league roster but not getting enough playing time? Let’s hear your comments.
