| In every year, without fail, there are solid players that go undrafted. However, I've noticed a somewhat disturbing trend of quality fantasy assets set to become free agents when the season begins. It seems that the majority of fantasy players are under-valuing a good deal of players and completely writing off others. Below is a list of some players that have gone undrafted in recent mock drafts that I've participated in. These are all players that at some point very early in the season will be on rosters but for some reason aren't deemed draft-worthy.
-- Mike Jacobs If it wa sn't for me taking Jacobs in the last round of my drafts he would have went undrafted in them. It's hard for me to comprehend why a player who will get you 30 HR and 90+ RBI is not a worth a 20-23rd round pick. I know that the BA has been substandard but he is due for some progression in this category. Jacobs is Jim Thome with more upside and without the restriction of the DH only availability. He is among the better options for your CI position and better than most of the DH options that people are going with.--Delmon Young Are we really giving up on him already? Keep in mind that he is still only 23 years old. He hasn't shown much power in his brief career but the power will come eventually and we could see some of that this year. If he can raise his BB rate just 3% then we could also see another possible 8 SB to his totals. He has shown that he can be a run producer and has the speed to be late round flier. There is too much potential in Young to simply leave him on the waiver wire. If no one else in your draft see this then you must take advantage. --Casey Blake Always under-appreciated, Blake is constantly passed up for the oft-injured and unproven. People would rather take risks to look like a genius by taking Hank Blalock or Pablo Sandoval instead of going with a sure-fire bet. Blake is a model of consistency but remains overlooked in most draft. People are drafting the unknown in Dallas McPherson and could end up paying for it in the long run. Blake is one of those stress free players where you slot him in and never have to worry about that spot the rest of the year. --John Maine Two years removed from a 191 IP/180K season and Maine has been demoted to waiver wire material? He is coming off of a shoulder injury but other pitchers coming off of injury are being scooped up in the middle rounds. I think Maine is a steal in the late rounds this year if he proves healthy in Spring Training and could be a huge bargain in auction formats. You take Johnny Cueto in the 14th and I'll get me some John Maine in the 22nd. --Phil Hughes Unless I missed something Phil Hughes is still a starting pitcher for the NY Yankees. That alone usually garners a draft pick but not for this guy. Hughes was all the rave for the last couple of years and now nobody wants to touch him. He just finished a great Arizona Fall League conditioning and his upside is still as high as ever. If you want to gamble in your draft take the safe bet with Hughes in the 20's rounds. One trend that I've been noticing is that people are selecting set-up men/backup closers all over the place. I'm unsure as to why people are wasting picks on players that may not give them any value until mid to late in the season if at all. Why are people drafting relief pitchers when there are quality players available that can produce for you all season long? There is no guarantee that those set-up men actually get the closer job if the incumbent fails. Do not waste picks people! Get production from every pick. Have any additions to the oddly undrafted? What is making these players go undrafted? What players are you taking in the late rounds ahead of these players?

Good stuff - the Phil Hughes one really surprises me, too.

Thanks guys.
Yes I have been in two drafts at MDC where Delmon Young went undrafted. Maybe it is because he is so low on their rankings and people just aren't looking at him. I hope that's the reason. I can see why people would draft the "closer in waiting" but what happens if that guy starts the season off horribly and now what are you left with? You passed up John Maine in the draft for a worthless player and now Maine is on another player's team.

not sure where you draft but Delmon Young has been going pretty early in almost all my mocks so far.
The other 4 have been all over the place, from early to late to not at all. Regardless, I agree with u all 5 have nice value at the right spot

That's only the case in daily transaction leagues like Yahoo. In a weekly mixed league, set-up men are worthless. How could an RP boost your strikeouts when they will only get like 70, and a starter will get 100+? Their ERA and WHIP will also have limited impact with so few innings pitched.
And is Delmon Young really not getting drafted? I find that really, really hard to believe!

Chris, my assumption here would be that the set up men being taken are the guys that can really boost your "K" and WHIP numbers in a roto league? Rather than drafting extra starters that could hurt you in the aforementioned categories, isn't it quite normal to see relief guns like Arredondo taken to boost those categories, while giving you the extra bonus of having a closer-in-waiting on your squad?
