Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo received a contract extension today that will keep him in uniform until the 2021-2022 season.  While the deal will keep fans happy, there's one person who must be disappointed.  That man is former Boston College goaltender and current Canucks top prospect Cory Schneider

Often times we see teams struggling to find one good goalie, while Vancouver had the opposite problem this past year.  Schneider was by far the best goalie in the American Hockey League's regular season in 2008-2009, while Luongo continued to be one of the best in the NHL.  Here's a look at their stats in their respective leagues from last season.

Name
Wins Shutouts Goals Allowed Average
Save %
Roberto Luongo 33 9 2.34 .920
Cory Schneider 28 5 2.04 .928

For those new to hockey statistics, a goaltenders performance is typically based on Save % and Goals Allowed Average (GAA) beacuse they do not factor in the offensive capabilities of the team they play for.  In this case, Schneider's statsitics were superb considering he led the league in GAA and Save %.

When dealing with minor leaguers however, in both baseball and in hockey, you need to consider that the level of competition is much weaker.  Schneider did get a handful of playing time in the NHL last year and the numbers were very different, however you have to keep the minor league numbers in mind.

The 2008-2009 season wasn't Schneider's first standout season by any means after playing at Boston College University for three years and leading the Golden Eagles to the National Championship game in both is sophomore and junior seasons.  He's won many prestigous awards including the Dave Peterson Goalie of the Year (collegiate), Hockey East All-Rookie Team, AHCA All-American First Team, and the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award (AHL Goalie of the Year).

With all of that being said, it appears that Schneider has a bright future ahead of him, but the Lunongo signing means his time in Vancouver will end soon.  Expect Schneider to be traded in the next year and if so, a starting job in the NHL could definitely be in the cards.
