Welcome to this week's installment of the Observation Deck. I see upwards of ten games a week via Center Ice or in person and this notebook will contain some scouting impressions combined with some numbers when necessary. Lets get to week 18:One of my favorite young players the Panthers David Booth has just returned after missing three full months with a concussion suffered at the hands of the Flyers Mike Richards. Booth was dropped in a lot of leagues and if he's available in yours he should be claimed immediately. He managed to score a goal, and register an assist in his first 3 contests back, and just as importantly was firing at will, picking up 12 shots in those three games. To my eye he looks fine and should give your roto team a lift. When the Coyotes lost Scottie Upshall this past week to a torn ACL (knee) ligament it was a huge blow to a team that is still in the thick of a playoff race in the Western Conference. They are going to need more offense from some of their forwards as I don't see the team bringing in a high salaried forward to pick up the slack. One player who should definitely see some increased opportunity is 20 year old Mikkel Boedker. I want to be clear that Boedker was not having an impressive year in the AHL with San Antonio (just 13 points in 34 games), but he has exactly the kind of tools the Coyotes will be able to use to offset this loss.Boedker is an exceptional skater with a big shot and a player that's a matchup problem for defensemen because he's capable of doing everything at a very high tempo. Put him on your watch lists right now in one year leagues. Also remember that this player appeared in 78 games last season so the team has had some confidence that he can be an NHL player even at that young age. I have mentioned the Sens Erik Karlsson a couple of times in this column. With his team playing much better (in midst of ten game win streak at the time of this writing), he's standing out of late showing much greater confidence and because he's getting more comfortable with the North American game, his offensive gifts are showing. He has 5 assists in his last 7 games played and should be productive over the season's last 25 games.
The Pens Kris Letang has endured some shoulder problems, and bouts of inconsistency this season but he's in the midst of playing his best hockey of the year right now. With 21 points on the year but exactly one third of them in his last ten games, he definitely looks like a guy that can help all fantasy leaguers over the last 25 games or so. He's a better blueline option than Alex Goligoski on his own team the rest of the way.
The Caps Semyon Varlamov (knee) is close to a return and should be grabbed if he somehow ended up on your waiver wire. The team has not got anything close to consistently good play in their nets from Jose Theodore or Michal Neuvirth (a rookie) and it's a safe bet that he'll re-establish himself as the #1 goalie on this scoring powerhouse. If he's available in trade, or was waived by an impatient owner at the time of his injury make sure you grab him up. Still with young goaltenders the Kings Jonathan Bernier posted a pair of shutouts this past week in Manchester and is currently second in the entire American Hockey League with a save percentage of .942. There is no question that barring injury Jonathan Quick will finish out the year as the #1 goalie with the Kings but if you're looking for the long term best bet in the Los Angeles net, I believe it will be Bernier. He's 21 and proving on a nightly basis that he has the AHL solved and is ready for an NHL role.
I can certainly see why the Flames would be interested in Chris Higgins, but I have no clue what their scouts saw to recommend adding Ales Kotalik to their mix. He leaves New York with 22 points (eight goals, 14 assists) in 45 games, and led the team only in healthy scratches. From a scouting standpoint he's a guy who prefers to remain on the perimeter despite having very good size (6-2, 225). He didn't get off anywhere near enough shots in the minutes he was given, and was completely indifferent when it came to the physical part of the game or in backchecking. If this sounds like Brent Sutter's kind of player to you then by all means add him to your fantasy rosters. I'm not as optimistic.
In Colorado with RW's Milan Hejduk, David Jones, and Marek Svatos sidelined with injuries, one player that has been noticeable of late is 24 year old Brandon Yip. He's managed eight goals in his first 19 NHL games and is available in virtually every fantasy league. He's a little light at just 175 pounds on a 6 foot frame, and isn't exactly shooting the puck of ton, but the numbers are certainly impressive. He's shown some smarts and decent anticipation and vision in the games I've watched him. This is a player who has seized an opportunity and produced. If you're dealing with a short term injury, or some general ineffectiveness from one of your forwards I'd spend a waiver pick on him at this point and see if he can keep it up. I got a quick hit question via email asking if I could pick out one name on the Bluejackets that might benefit from Ken Hitchcock's ouster as the head coach Wednesday in Columbus. The first name I could think of was RW Jakub Voracek. He's been a deep minus all season (currently -12), but has so much skill that he simply can't end the season with only 10-12 goals (he currently has eight). He'll likely remain on the second line but I expect he might take a few more chances and perhaps see more games in the 17 minute area (currently at 15 minutes playing time a contest). He's too good a player to keep producing at about a half a point a game level.
There have been some negative things written about Canucks prospect Sergei Shirokov of late. As a fantasy player you only need to know that he's a one way offensive talent with the kind of skills that wowed the Vancouver brass during the preseason. Of late his defensive play at Manitoba (AHL) has come under fire. If he gets another callup with the Canucks let everybody else focus on the negative stuff being said - he very easily could start showing up in the boxscores and make a late season impact.
