May Day or Mayday Mayday – tale of two teams PDF  | Print |  E-mail

May 1st is referred to by many as May Day.  Saying it twice in a row refers to you needing rescue.  One is a day of celebration, the other is what you hope to avoid.  Today we have a tale of two fantasy teams.

May Day - Team One

Team One’s first 12 picks drafted in early March:

Round 1 – Albert Pujols
Round 2 – Alfonso Soriano
Round 3 – Jason Bay
Round 4 – Kevin Youkilis
Round 5 – Dan Haren
Round 6 - Bobby Abreu
Round 7 – Victor Martinez
Round 8 – Robinson Cano
Round 9 – Torii Hunter
Round 10 – Jonathan Broxton
Round 11 - Zack Greinke
Round 12 – Jorge Cantu

Wow, this team is on fire and obviously in first place.  Remember its only a month and  it’s a marathon not a sprint.  Figure out a way to improve.  Sell a few players high, buy a slow starting stud low from someone who is desperate for a spark (maybe Torii Hunter for BJ Upton or Carl Crawford) .  Work on making sure all your counting stats and starts are being maximized. Basically, take advantage now while your team is hot.

Mayday Mayday - Team Two

Team Two’s first 12 picks drafted in early March:

Round 1 – Alex Rodriguez
Round 2 – BJ Upton
Round 3 - Ichiro Suzuki
Round 4 - Brandon Webb
Round 5 – Brian McCann
Round 6- Geovany Soto
Round 7 - Stephen Drew
Round 8 – Ervin Santana
Round 9 - Joakim Soria
Round 10 – BJ Ryan
Round 11 - Lastings Milledge
Round 12 – Alex Gordon

Ouch!  This team has more injuries than DL and bench slots.  If you drafted Team Two, the season is not lost.  There is still time to rescue your team.  Ichiro is back, Arod and Big Erv are coming soon, others will start producing again soon.  This team has all the right names. It is just a matter of health and playing your cards right.  If you haven’t already, go find a few trading partners that might be willing to take a chances on some of these big name players coming back strong in a few months and get some above average players who will continue to get you counting stats today. Someone out there is still high on Lasting Milledge. He was traded for Chris Duncan in a CBS league earlier this week.  With a team like this that has so many injuries and missing that many at bats and/or innings pitched make sure you stay strong in your percentage categories, like batting average, ERA, and WHIP.  Don’t forget that you don’t have to win every category. Just finish in the top half and you will do very well.  Whatever you do, make sure you don’t panic completely and sell the farm.  You don’t have to play for next year yet.  This team has only had one bad month. Technically all it needs is to have one great month to get back in the race.

Tale of the Tape

On draft day I am pretty confident you all would agree that Team Two was the clear cut favorite, while Team One was average.  Well needless to say I find it pretty amazing what a difference a month of playing baseball can make to a fantasy team.  One Team with a month of hot players versus another loaded with injuries and slow starters can really make those standings look light night and day.  The good news for both teams is we are only a month into the season (20-21 games).  Some teams need to take advantage of the hot start while others need to not panic cause the good months are still coming as the weather heats up. There are still over 140 games left.

Remember, fantasy baseball is a marathon not a sprint. May (month two) is just starting!

Enjoy your May Day!
