Pete Rusaw's class received their week four assignment:

List 3 players you have a realistic chance of drafting in the first round, then justify your first choice.

Here's what they had to say:
•    Based on the my teams' (The Steelers) draft position (2), three players that I would like to get in my first round pick would be:
Hanley Ramirez (SS), Albert Pujols (1B) or David Wright (3B).

My first pick would be Hanley Ramirez as Short Stop. The position of Short Stop is very hard to fill as the position isn't very common among baseball players. His statistical records are high as a Short Stop, and as my teams' drafting position is 2nd, we could have a very good chance as getting Ramirez as our first choice. By choosing Hanley Ramirez as first choice, my team would be covered for Short Stop position and he is also good in other positions.
By computing his Weighted Average, his score is: 925.38732. Also, Ramirez's Standardized Score (on a z-scale) is: 7.09189, by which both scores are considered good and above average of a Weighted Average of 500. The larger the number is for a Standardized Score, the further away the score is from average (0). So, Ramirez's score of 7.09189 is very good by it's large difference from 0 (Ramirez is 7 Standard Deviations away from the mean of 0 on a z-scale score).

My second choice would be Albert Pujols as a first baseman. First basemen have good chances to keep the opposing team from gaining runs and getting the player out by the first chance possible. Pujols' Weighted Average is: 683.82868 and his Standardized Score is: 8.97948. While Pujols' Standardized Score is larger than average, Pujols' Weighted Average also states that he is above average almost by 200 points than the average baseball player (which average is 500).

My third choice for drafting would be David Wright as third baseman. Third basemen also have good chances to keep opposing teams' players from progressing to completing scores. As Wright's Weighted Average: 790.53798 and Standardized Score: 8.55483 also state that Wright is above the average baseball players scores and has the ability to do well for my team, the Steelers.
To recap, three players in which I would choose during my first pick would be Hanley Ramirez, Albert Pujols or David Wright.
My team as the 2nd drafting position has some advantages and some disadvantages, but I know with careful statistical consolation between my partner and I, we will be able to create a well-designed team that can have a winning potential.

•    TITLE: Dreaded Drafting

Alright. The day has come. The time of discussion and planning and pretend Excel sheets are almost over. My Statistics class is finally moving along into actually DRAFTING and playing this fake game of baseball!

Dun Dun Dun Dunnnnn!

Like a lot of things in this project, I have not understood how we were supposed to draft these players into our team. For those of the class who have played Fantasy Sports, or knows a thing about real baseball, the phrase, "Your team has the sixth pick" makes sense to them.

Me?

Well...I should preserve at least a portion of my dignity.

But no worries! After having my teacher explain it to me over and over...and over, I finally understand that being the sixth pick in the Statistics Fantasy League means that I could potentially pick the 5th, 6th, and 7th player on the list. A little general, I know, but let's not confuse myself yet.

The team my partner and I have created is called Bracey (I'll spare you the details behind the name) and like I have mentioned a few times, we have the 6th pick in the first round of our Statistics League.

In the first round, my team has a realistic shot at picking Jose Reyes, Ryan Braun, and Carlos Beltran. Now, myself, I would pick Jose Reyes.
Not only does he have a great baseball name (that's a name you could shout to the stands!) but he is also a shortstop and has the most stolen bases (60) out of all the other players. According to my partner (who is one of those people who has done Fantasy Sports before AND knows baseball; how lucky am I right?), it's difficult to find good shortstops. This is called Position Scarcity and is the main reason behind why I would like to pick Reyes out of those three guys. Now, Reyes' other categories (Batting Average, Run Batted Ins, Home Runs, and
Runs) are arguably rather low. He only has 17 projected homeruns for instance. But stolen bases can help you and besides...SHORTSTOP!

Jose is the way to go!

On to the second round!

Wait...how does drafting work then...?

Time for an audible sigh.

•    Drafting – it's coming closer
We have a long phase of preparation behind us, and finally the drafting process comes closer. Finally it is time, to think about the players which determine whether we will succeed – or fail. The probably most important decisions in the whole game are made during the drafting phase, and this key event comes up soon.

In our Statistics league, my team, the “Army ROTC” (by the way, the name was not my choice), has the second pick in the first round. This means we can pick almost every player we want – but who is that going to be?

Three players which are possible and realistic options to be our first pick, are Jose Reyes, David Wright, and Johan Santana. All three of them are top players, the differences in their statistics are incredibly small – but we have to make a choice. If we pick one, someone else will probably pick the other two players, before we get to draft again. Without a doubt: The first player has to be chosen wisely.

After a little bit of research I found out, that most people think of the pitcher as most important position. Well, that is reasonable, but do I really want to give up players, who have better statistics, but do not have such an important position? On the Top-500-List of fantasypros911.com, Reyes and Wright are on position one and three. The first pitcher in the list, Santana, has the 9th place.

However, after comparing statistics and thinking about different draft strategies, I figured out that Santana will probably be my first choice. This has mainly the reason, that if I don't pick him in the first round, I probably wont get a pitcher who is higher than position 30 – and still, although he is not on place one, he is a really good player and might play a key role during the season.

•    FYI I don’t quite understand how to draft good players but from our mock draft this is what my partner and I came up with. Did I do good?
In our statistics fantasy league, my team, LOVE, has the 7th pick in first round. Three players that I have a realistic shot at picking are…
   Grady Sizemore       Position: OF
   Johan Santana        Position: SP
   Kevin Youkilis          Position: 1B & 3B

Of these three my choice would be Kevin Youkilis because he plays two positions which isn’t very common.

•    In our Statistics Fantasy league, my team, The Best has the 10th pick in the first round of the draft, 3 players that I have a realistic shot at picking are Miguel Cabrera, Tim Lincecum, and Mark Teixeira. Of these 3 players my choice would be Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera is only 25 years old and has been playing in the majors for nearly 6 years. He is not yet in his prime and if his BA gets closer to his career average (.309) he could drive in even more runs. He had 127 rbi last year with his lowest BA. He could possibly get 150 rbi this year. Last year he hit 26 of his 37 HR in the second half of the season and batted .304 in the second half. With a full season in Detroit he could have a better year. With a not too good of a season last year some people might not want to pick him but i feel like they might just slip him by and i would be able to get a very good player for 10th pick

•    In our statistics fantasy league, my team, the Green Hats has first pick in first round. Three players that I am thinking of picking are Hanley Ramirez, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols. Of these three my choice would be Hanley Ramirez because he is a power hitter that can still steal bases. Plus, Hanley Ramirez is a short stop so he can fill a position that is normally a hard position to fill. I believe that Hanley Ramirez definately deserves to be the number one pick of the draft.

•    In our statistics fantasy league, my team, team Ramrod has the ninth pick in the first round. Three players that i have a realistic shot at picking are Johan Santana, Josh Hamilton, and Victor Martinez. I picked these people because i need a pitcher, a catcher, and outfield. My first pick would probably be Johan Santana because I would need a decent pitcher to make a solid team. He is ranked number nine in the top 500. I think his projected stats are very good to make a leader for my team.

•    In our Statistics Fantasy League, my team, the F.G. Jelliez, has the #1 pick in the first round. 3 players that I have a realistic shot at picking are Jose Reyes, Albert Pujols, and Hanley Ramirez. Of these 3, my choice would be Jose Reyes, because my team was able to compute the weighted average, which determined how valuable each scoring catergory our league was tracking, for each of the players. By doing so, we were able to see that Jose Reyes was at the top of the list, meaning that his averages were the most valuable. Also, Yahoo Sports! player ranker has determined that Reyes has an 89.09% favorability among other managers throughout the leagues. Reyes is also one of the best shortstops in the league, making him a very valuable player and one the will go within the first round picks. CBS Sports has also ranked the top 40 shortstops and has placed Reyes 2nd, behind Hanley Ramirez. Despite the fact that Reyes is projected to have a low amount of home-runs, he is also predicted to have over 60 stolen bases, making him a valuable asset in that scoring category.

•    In our Statistics fantasy baseball league my team the Lava Lamps has the second pick in the first round. three players thati have a realistic chance of drafting are, Albert Pujols, Roy Halladay and Tim Lincecum.Of the three players i want my first choice to be Albert Pujols because in all honesty my brother who has played fantasy baseball said that he would make a solid first choice, and my brothers knowledge of the game far surpasses my own. I like to think of him as a valuable resource simply because that was who he chose to draft first and his advice is always helpful. Some other reasons i chose Albert Pujols are, he is a good hitter and is projected to do well and he is one of the best first basemen in the projections. He is an all around player and i like players that are balanced statistically speaking. I also did some online research outside of fantasy pros to verify my information and on one of the sites he was projected as the number one choice. On another web page he was the top first basemen out of 25, i can honestly say that if he shows up that many times over different web pages he is definitely my first choice of players to draft.

•    In the statistics Day one Block one league, The Three Musketeers were alloted pick number seven in the round.  Realistically, this position may allow my team to select
J Rollins, M Teixiera, and D Pedroia.  The draft of these athletes should be achievable if most other teams do not grasp for scarcity players in the introductory rounds.  I have selected the aforementioned athletes for their noted skill in their little dominated area of expertise, as well as their potential to succeed overall, particularly in the categories of batting average, runs, home runs, stolen bases, and runs batted in.  In fact, some independent research was done which indicated that Teixeira's past records place him in the top five scorers in all the previously stated sections save stolen bases.

•    In our stats Fantasy League my team, Da Ballas, has the 6Th pick in the first round.  Three players I have a realistic shot at picking are Chase Utley, Mark Texeria, and Jose Reyes.  Of these three choices I would pick Chase Utley because of position scarcity.  Chase Utley is a great second baseman and all around player.  There aren't many second baseman that have his skills.  If we picked him up early we would jump ahead of people because there second baseman would be far below ours

•    In our statistics fantasy league, my team, Da Ballas has the 6th pick in the first round. Three players I have a realistic shot at picking are, Miguel Cabrera, Ryan Braun, and Jimmy Rollins, of these three my choice would be Jimmy Rollins. Jimmy Rollins is the third best short stop on the rankings list, this is important because short stops are a scarce position, and I think it is important to have a good middle infield to support your pitching staff. He also has a pretty good batting average with a huge amount of stolen bases. He has been referred to as a 5 tool player, which means excelling in hitting for average, power, baserunning skills, throwing and fielding abilities. So I just have a good feeling about how he will perform this season, he had his career high of 47 bases stolen last season and was named MVP of the National League in 2007. He also holds the longest hitting streak of 38 games in Phillie, pretty impressive.

Eric Gietzen

•    In our Statistics Fantasy league, my team, the Champs have the 4th pick in the first round. 3 players that I have a realistic shot at picking are Roy Halladay (SP), Geovany Soto (C), and Tommy Hanson (RHP). Of these three my choice would be Tommy Hanson (RHP) because he has become and "untouchable commodity" for the Atlanta Braves and had 163 K's in 138 innings in the minor leagues.

•    In our Fantasy Baseball League's snake draft for my statistics class my partner and I get the 8th pick. The 8th pick means that we are going to get decent players but probably not very many superstars. My partner and I are planning on picking the either one or two pitcher percentage wise depending on who we believe has the most potential based off of their age. We are also planning to utilize position scarcity, and pick a surplus of great starting pitchers and hopefully trade them for big hitters later. We plan to pick only a decent closer because they are only good in one pitching category versus the starting pitchers who affect four categories. Somewhere between all of this, my partner and I are going to pick decent batters with position scarcity in mind.

•    In our statistics fantasy baseball league my team, The Lava Lamps, has the 2nd pick in the first draft round. 3 players that my teamates and I might realistically be able to draft might be Jose Reyes, Carl Crawford, and Brian McCann. Out of these three players, I will most likely first want Jose Reyes because he is a pretty good all around player and his projected overall stats make him seem to be worthy of a first draft pick. My second choice though would to go with either a pitcher or a catcher because they are also important to a solid team, and position scarcity affects whether or not a good player is realistically available. For that reason I believe that I would draft Brian McCann because he's an alright catcher and our team needs one anyway, and I want a good catcher to help balance out the team. My strategy for this draft will probably be based on all statistics since I'm not an avid baseball fan, so my team will be statistically strong and hopefully that works out for us Lava Lamps.

•    In our statistics Fantasy League, my team, "The Best" has the 10th pick in the first round. Three players that I have a realistic shot at picking are C.C. Sabithia, Jimmy Rollins, and Tim Luncecum. Of these three my choice would be C.C. Sibithia because he is ranked so high as a starting pitcher. I also think i have a realistic shot at getting him because he is ranked around tenth in all, which is also my team's "turn". I believe he would be a great asset to my team because it would help us be equal to the others because they would have the better players in other positions, and hopefully our good pitcher would help cancel some of them out.

Erin Haworth

•    If I were to draft three players I would chose Miguel Cabrera, Tim Lincecum, and Ryan Braun. I would chose all three of these guys because Ryan Braun is rated 1st in his position of Outfield position and plus he's got great stats in Batting Average, Runs, and RBI's. I chose Tim Lincecum because he's ranked 2nd in his position of Starting Pitcher and he also has a good amount of innings pitched. I would chose Miguel Cabrera because he's ranked number two in two positions of First Baseman and Third Baseman. All these guys have great potential for this year's season, and have shown it with their stats.

Kevin Alexander

•    In our stats Fantasy League my team, Da Ballas, has the 6Th pick in the first round.  Three players I have a realistic shot at picking are Jose Reyes, Hanley Ramirez, and  Chase Utley.  Of these three choices I would pick Jose Reyes because of position scarcity.  Jose Reyes is a great shortstop and all around player.  There aren't many great short stops that have his skills.

Aaron Huson

•    In our Statistics Fantasy League, my team the Lava Lamps has the second pick in the first round.  Our team has not yet settled on three players for realistical choices due to the absence of group members.  However, when we settle on three players we will be predicting them based upon projected statistics, their position scarcity, as well as how their five categories fit into one score.
