Spring Training Week One Question:

Why Hanley Ramirez is Fantasy Baseball’s number one pick?

Greg Marta, the home team, will take the pro side to this debate Whether you're in an auction or snake fantasy baseball draft Hanley Ramirez is the biggest no-brainer #1 draft pick in a long time.  In fact, Mock Draft Central has his ADP at 1.23, more than a full round higher than #2 Albert Pujlos - that's consensus.

Let's compare Hanley to the rest of the top 5 fantasy baseball draft picks of 2009:
Jose Reyes - despite SB category killer lowest HR and RBI totals of the top 5
David Wright - Hanley-ish minus 15 SBs and middle infield qualification
Albert Pujlos - sick BA can't make up for lack of speed, only top 5 player projected under 10 SBs
Alex Rodriguez - busted hip
300 BA, 100+ RBI, 100+ R, 30+ HR, 30+ SB, unlike all of the other top 5 (and anyone else in baseball), Hanley will top all of these totals.

Expect even better numbers as Hanley drops from leadoff to the 3 hole.  No doubt that will cost him roughly 20 runs but he'll exchange them for 30-40 RBIs.  Hanley also has the added security of having just turned 25, so he's still on his way up.

Last year's stolen base total of 35 marked the lowest of his career.  However, this looks like a safe floor and with all of Hanley's other stat goodness is more than enough to cement him as the #1 overall fantasy baseball player in 2009.  Don't forget, he still has the 50 stolen base upside that he showed in his first 2 seasons.

There are only about half a dozen other blue chip middle infielders worthy of top 20 consideration.  A 300 hitting 30/30 guy batting in the heart of the order is probably worthy of #1 overall draft consideration regardless of position - the fact that Hanley Ramirez is a shortstop locks it up.

3 and 1/2 Reasons to Bank Hanley Ramirez as the #1 Fantasy Baseball Pick for the 2009 Season:
1.    According to Graphical Player, Hanley had the highest WOW factor of any player in baseball in 2008 with 25 - Weight on Winners means that no other player gave you a better edge in winning your  league than Han-Ram
2.    Batting Eye has improved for 3 straight years to .75 - higher BA and OBP are possible in 2009
3.    HR/Fly Ball Rate has improved for 3 straight years to 19% - growth trend suggests career best HRs in 2009
Bonus Fact -  Gained 24 pounds of muscle in the offseason according to the Miami Herald - more everything!
