Filling the Gaps – Outfield Speed PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Roaming The Outfield
Written by Sean
Touting the importance of the end game for your drafts is what FantasyPros911.com is all about.  We are here to help give you that edge in your drafts so you win your league.  We have all heard that “You can’t win your league in the first few rounds but you can lose it.”   What you don’t always hear is that the end game is where you can make up the biggest difference by filling in the gaps of your almost completely drafted team.

One of the most important things to realize when you are drafting, whether it be a straight, snake or auction draft, is how you are putting your team together.  Nothing is worse then figuring out that you are down to the end of your draft and you realize you are short on certain categories.  Today, I have a few guys in the outfield that can help you fill in the gaps if you find yourself short on speed at the end of your drafts.

40+ stolen bases

Willy Taveras (Cin)

Taveras is not high on my personal overall list even though he is a great source of speed.  He is moving to a youth oriented Cincinnati outfield.  He tends to go a little early in drafts due to his speed but if he falls he is a worthy late pickup due to the speed alone.

30+ stolen bases

Michael Bourn (Hou)
Juan Pierre (LAD)
Carlos Gomez (Min)

These three guys all have the possibility of being huge upside picks or complete flops due to playing time.  If Bourn can get on base with more frequency he will be, pun intended, “a steal.”  If he doesn’t, then it will be hard to steal from the bench.  Gomez and Pierre have the unfortunate possibility of becoming fourth outfielders but given the playing will be very nice late round pickups.

20+ stolen bases

Coco Crisp (KC)
Denard Span (Minn)
Cameron Maybin (Fla)
Brett Gardner
(NYY)
Nyjer Morgan (Pitt)

Coco Crisp is the best value from this group, with Denard Span not far behind.  Neither will hurt you much in your other categories so they make fine safe picks.  Feeling riskier?  Then try Maybin or Gardner or Morgan.  Upsides are there but the leashes may be short.

15+ stolen bases

Randy Winn (SF)
Jerry Owens (CHW)
Eric Byrnes (Arz)
Andrew McCutcheon (Pitt)

For those in deep leagues these guys should all produce steals, just in different ways.  Winn will play all year long and be a poor man's Crisp or Span.  Owens and Byrnes will get you the steals but won’t be playing everyday.  If they suddenly do, then put them in the bracket above.  McCutcheon will make it to the majors at some point this year and when he does he will start to impress with his base stealing.  The power will come in the years to come.  No matter what, it’s safe to say all of these four players should get you 15 or more steals this year.

So there you go.  A handful of outfield speed guys to choose from in the end game of your drafts.  Want more draft help?  Sign up for the premium site and get a direct line to our experts, plus a draft guide that is updated at least once a week.

How about Fred Lewis of the Giants? He stole 21 last season and should be good for at least that many this season.

Primetime, I agree with your others but as you suggested I purposely left most of those off the list cause I felt they probably would not be drafted in a standard league and would just be on the waiver wire when the season starts. Thanks for adding them though!

Note : there has been some discussion of Anderson starting on Twitter this morning due to the probability of Griffey signing in Atlanta.

Good article Sean, here are a few others that are more of waiver wire guys. Rajai Davis, Josh Anderson, Willie Harris, Kosuke Fuckodome all these guys can get to the 15-20 range in steals.
