| Once again this week I am here touting the importance of the end game for your drafts. The end game is where you can make up the biggest difference by filling in the gaps of your almost completely drafted team. Remember, one of the most important things to realize when you’re drafting, whether it is a straight, snake or auction draft, is to make sure you are compiling enough statistics. Nothing is worse than figuring out that you are down to the end of your draft and are short on certain categories. Here are a few guys in the outfield that can help you fill in the gaps if you find yourself short on power at the end of your drafts. 25+ home runs Jack Cust (A’s) Rick Ankiel (Cardinals) Luke Scott (Orioles) Luke Scott and Rick Ankiel are both going very late in most 12 team drafts. They are currently two of my favorite picks to use as a reserve or last outfielder. Everyone knows Jack Cust can pound the ball. Be aware though that he will have a low batting average that will actively hurt you, as opposed to not hurting. 20+ home runs Adam Lind (Blue Jays) Matt Joyce (Rays) Marcus Thames (Tigers) Cody Ross (Marlins) Jeremy Hermida (Marlins) Andruw Jones (Rangers) Adam Lind goes to the head of the class for this group. Lind will give you a respectable batting average, while the others will all bat in the .250 to .260 range. Take this as a gentle reminder to make sure you tread carefully when you make these last round picks. If you end up playing these types of players, they may hurt your team in one category more than they help you their main category 15+ home runs Jeff Francoeur (Braves) Elijah Dukes (Nationals) Ryan Church (Mets) Chase Headley (Padres) Franklin Gutierrez (Mariners) Jason Kubel (Twins) Delmon Young (Twins) Ken Griffey Jr. (Mariners) Jody Gerut (Padres) Everyone in this group of 15+ homerun potential players will help your power numbers without hurting your team in other areas. The key to most of these players, as mentioned in many of my previous articles, is whether they will get the playing time. Keep an eye on the positional battles and lineups in the next month as opening day approaches and draft accordingly. If your draft is in the next week or two, lean toward Franklin Gutierrez or Delmon Young. Both are third year players who should get plenty of at bats. In conclusion, there are plenty of late round outfielders to choose from for filling in the statistical gaps of your teams. Ideally, you won’t need any of these guys but if you do they are there.
