| Good morning everyone and welcome to another Fantasy Hockey For Beginners. Today we take a look at the waiver wire. Why? Well it is only nine days to the start of the regular season (Fantasy Hockey season). Week 1 will be here before you know it and honestly being prepared for this is key in your fate on Week 1 and beyond as well. There are several things you need to know about a waiver wire before you even just dive in.
For one, read your league settings. Every commissioner has a different preference when it comes to waiver wire time. Typically the waiver period lasts one or two days, but it can vary tremendously. It does not matter what type of league you are in, there is almost always a waiver wire. Whether its a head to head, dynasty, keeper, auction, salary cap, or other, there is typically a wire to look into. It can mean the difference between fantasy glory and fantasy death. Time to pick a league to take a look at their waiver wire. This week I'll use my BTR fantasy hockey league because really it was an easy target. Yahoo goes more my rankings while ESPN goes by percentage owned. You want to keep this in mind that just because a guy is owned in a lot of leagues does not mean he is better necessarily. A lot of beginners make that mistake at first. It is not your fault. It is something that just happens. Also look for players that are retired, injured, or not playing in the NHL for various reasons. Scratch them off your list right away. Next take a look at your roster real quick to see what you need, that is if you need anything. Some fantasy owners make a policy of only changing obvious autodraft mistakes and well for injuries when you run out of IR spots. For example, my BTR league has 3 IR slots but some may have zero or one. I even will go as far as watching some preseason games online just to get an idea of who is really trying hard to crack rosters. They may be worth a look when you are perusing amongst your needs. When you do find someone you want, don't hesitate to pick them up. Waiver claims often go my priority and order so then begins the waiting game. One of the hardest things is to wait to see if your waiver claim has gone through. Expectant mothers probably have an easier time delivering children. Okay maybe not, but you get the general gist. However, if your claim does go through you are good to go. If not it is back to the waiver wire. Keep in mind this is only for players who have a W next to their name. Most guys this time of year are free agents which means you can just go pick them up if you have a spot available or do a simple add and drop. Just keep in mind that using the waiver wire judiciously is likely the best action to take. What we are going to do next week is have a little fun in getting you ready for Week 1. After all the season does start next Thursday...just eight days away. If there are any questions at all...just email away at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
