| This week we turn the tables on the column a bit. The last several weeks I have been giving advice on all sorts of fantasy hockey questions. Now we spin it around. If you are too young to remember record players...do not worry about it. I plucked one of my teams from our very own Blog Talk Radio league. Now to explain some of the specifics. First off, it is a 16 team league with four divisions consisting of four teams each. There are 11 scoring categories, and yes it is a head to head (H2H) league. Normal H2H rules apply. The key wrinkle is a category like Average Time Of Ice is used in this league. Seven offensive categories and four goaltending categories make up the league scoring. Time to take a look at this.
Yes this is my actual roster. We did not edit this in any way so you could see it in its entirety. That is the point of this column to give you the nuts, bolts, and kitchen sinks of fantasy hockey leagues. Also, this is my whole team for Tuesday and no changes will be made for a few days. In this league, I went with the strategy of strength in numbers. Going with a balanced attack and taking few risks. Unfortuantely, Week 1 in ESPN leagues consisted of all of about three days. So throw that first week out the window when I got clubbed (6-3-2). My goaltending looked pretty good on paper. I had two up and comers in Quick and Rinne and then balanced it with Pascal Leclaire who on the surface had a good chance of playing well in Ottawa. What has resulted has obviously been mixed to say the least. Yes it is early but Pekka Rinne is not even the starter right now in Nashville. Actually Dan Ellis is for now. Quick has played well from a wins standpoint but has been inconsistent at times as well. Goaltending is clearly my major issue but with teams short goaltending...it may be tough to acquire a consistent netminder which is what my team sorely needs. Doing the math real quick...16 X 2 is 32. There are only 30 teams in the NHL so clearly some teams do not have enough starting goaltending. The trick is to piece together what you can or trade a "chip" away. A chip is a player you feel can get the best return for dangling him out there in the trade market in the first place. Ironically my offense has been very consistent fresh off of a 33 point week (12 G, 21 A). This is all without my number one defenseman Andrei Markov who is out till the All Star Break after his ankle was cut open by Carey Price's skate. I am giving a few days for guys like Pominville and Blake to get it together before I make some moves on the weekend. Early on, you really want to wait before cutting the cord. It shows panic and fear and yes other owners see it. AT the same time, you do not want to hold on to a player too long. Other owners see that and figure the guy may not be willing to trade when the time comes. This is an extremely delicate balance. It is something that you will be able to gauge better as the season rolls along. Are there any other major concerns that you see? I am always curious. Next week we will take a look at some of the most surprising performances of this early part of the season. As always you can email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Forget goaltending written by David Miller, October 15, 2009
You need to upgrade your LW. Kulemin?? A wasted roster slot. Blake? Well maybe for SOG but at what cost? There has to be some hidden LW potential on the wire (at least a PIM guy instead of Kulemin) Was Stalberg dropped? He is a better bet despite his -3. Jody Shelly? Boogard (sp?) Cammellari needs help.
I think Leclaire and Quick will do you fine until Rinne perks up. Follow your advice and don't panic too soon on your goalies. Write comment
