Fantasy Hockey for Beginners: Fantasy And Florida? PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Fantasy Hockey for Beginners
Written by Chris Wassel
Greetings from Florida as well who am I kidding my family is there...not me.  After all, someone has to hold down the fort.  We must protect this house you know.  So while they enjoy the somewhat cooler weather in Orlando, err Disney (the happiest place on Earth)...I bring you another column of Fantasy Hockey for Beginners.  Now this week is not an exercise in typing like some have joked but we take a look at our very own podcast BTR league.  We have a few heavyweights in there like Curtis Lanton and Darryl Houston Smith (Black Moses).  However the big names cannot do well in every single league.  Injuries come along the way and this year injuries really are hitting like a plague from the 1300's that was rather famous (bubonic, I believe).

Be afraid everyone of the injury ninja..........

Now we do joke about this but one thing that is no joking matter is the following.  There are around 110 NHL regulars currently out with injuries of some sort.  The picture above is Keith Primeau, and yes he retired from post concussion syndrome as the little Ninja clearly indicates.  I have talked to quite a few fantasy hockey experts over the last several weeks and they are amazed by the amount of injuries and more so to whom they are occurring.  Guys like Ovechkin, Luongo, and Malkin are all out at the same time.  Some people have literally seven or eight people on their Injured Reserved list.  They really cannot cut them which hamstrings their ability to put a starting lineup on a night in and night out basis.  However, they cannot risk the long term because of the short term.  Its a really tough break that is affecting too many fantasy owners and too early honestly.

There are worse rosters in the league as far as injury but let's take a look at Darryl's team (Rotowire Rangers).

Wow it almost looks like a sea of red out there.  Think about it if about 1/6 of NHL rosters is decimated by injuries...your fantasy team is probably as bad or worse.  If yours is not, consider yourself very lucky.  I am fortunate to only have one major injury and that is to Andrei Markov but it happened early and I was easily able to cope with it by picking up players that could get me points elsewhere.  When there are one or two injuries, you can do that.  However, when there are injuries all over the place the best thing to do is find out who is really expendable and just ride out your top players and their injuries until they come back.  DO NOT trade them in a panic because that is a sure fire away to short circuit your fantasy season.  After all we are only in the second month here.  There is still plenty of fantasy hockey to go.

I have also heard horror stories of guys like Sean Leahy who had eight guys on the IR at one point and really this is a reality and far too early in the season.  As everyone knows some leagues have "Can't Cut" lists as well so one must keep that in mind as well.  Yes it is a lot to digest when it seems your fantasy hockey world is collapsing in on you but someone has to.

What would the best thing for Darryl to do?  Exactly what he is doing.  You have to ride the wave and hope the injured players come back soon.  A fluid situation like Jonathan Toews (concussion) is never fun but Malkin should be back soon enough.  Assessing your injuries can literally save your season so if you have not already...take a look at your injured players almost as intently as your able bodied players this week.  You may not thank me now but you will later.

Next week we are going to salute the hockey veterans who have made amazing fantasy impacts at their age.  While most of these names will not surprise you...maybe one or two will.  As always you can email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
