Waiver Wire Pickups
Written by Chuck Anderson

altChances are most fantasy teams have seen their stable of running backs take a hit or two since draft day.  Some possible waiver wire replacements emerged on Sunday and are gaining steam on the most added list.  The first player to be suspended for inappropriate tweets is being roundly dropped by fantasy owners as well.

Added

Ryan Moats:  He has no assurances of carrying the ball more than a handful of times a game going forward, but based on his
monster performance Moats is worth an immediate claim.  He has no real track record, in four years he has 141 carries and a 4.4 yard average.  It is his second year in Houston's system.  The Colts are up next, and while they are known as a poor rush defense this season they are allowing the 17th most yards per game and the 21st most fantasy points to running backs.  Hard-hitting safety Bob Sanders was on the field for 41 of Indianapolis' 54 defensive plays.

Drop for him:  Jamal Lewis, Larry Johnson, Donald Brown
Don't drop for him:  Chris Wells, Ahmad Bradshaw, Knowshon Moreno

Justin Fargas:  He did not have a great rushing day, but he received the most touches and found the end zone.  As long as the Raiders keep the game competitive they are a run-heavy offense.  The best matchup on the schedule is after the bye, against Kansas City.  Darren McFadden is
not a definite to return and the Chiefs have a season high of 24 points scored.

Drop for him:  Chester Taylor, LenDale White, Shonn Greene
Don't drop for him:  Carnell Williams, LeSean McCoy, Laurence Maroney

Malcom Floyd:  He replaced the
waived Chris Chambers in the starting lineup.  Floyd had just two catches on Sunday, but the Chargers attempted a season low 25 passes.  He is more of a big-play option than a possession receiver, his career average per catch is 17.0 yards.  In 2008 four of his 27 receptions were touchdown catches.

Drop for him:  Donnie Avery, Earl Bennett, Ted Ginn Jr.
Don't drop for him:  Michael Crabtree, Jacoby Jones, Devery Henderson

Kevin Boss:  He gained a season high 70 yards on Sunday and scored his first touchdown.  He has been particularly quiet since hurting his ankle in Week 4, but indicated that he is feeling
much better.  The exciting news for Boss is the Chargers are next on the schedule and they are very soft against opposing tight ends.  Just this year Tony Scheffler, Heath Miller, and Zach Miller have rung up big fantasy days on them.

Drop for him:  Chris Cooley, John Carlson, Tony Scheffler
Don't drop for him:  Ben Watson, Visanthe Shiancoe, Jeremy Shockey

altDropped

Larry Johnson:  He is suspended for at least next week's game and the Chiefs may decide to flat-out release him.  He has no touchdowns on the year and only Glen Coffee has a lower yards per carry average.  Part time contributors Ryan Moats and Laurence Maroney have more fantasy points than Johnson over the balance of the year.

Drop him for:  Mike Bell, Darren McFadden, Jamaal Charles
Don't drop him for:  Jerious Norwood, Mewelde Moore, Edgerrin James

Mario Manningham:  He did not play last week and there are some
mixed signals as to the severity of his shoulder injury.  He has 55 receiving yards or fewer in five previous games, though he did score twice.  Hakeem Nicks has been more productive for a month and may have vaulted Manningham in the pecking order.

Drop him for:  Jerricho Cotchery, Jeremy Maclin, Nate Burleson
Don't drop him for:  Terrell Owens, Roy Williams, Steve Breaston

Bernard Berrian:  He is Minnesota's third leading receiver.  The hamstring problems that popped up way back in the preseason are still
nagging him and he is posting the lowest yards per catch average of his career (11.1).  He has a bye this week to rest up, and a very attractive schedule following it:  Detroit, Seattle, and Chicago at home then a trip to Arizona.

Drop him for:  Hakeem Nicks, Sidney Rice, Mike Sims-Walker
Don't drop him for:  Kevin Walter, Eddie Royal, Torry Holt

Arizona Defense:  They were a popular one-week pickup because they were on a hot streak and faced the turnover-prone Carolina Panthers.  They are still a top ten team statistically against the run, but got severely burned Sunday.  The matchup this week, at Chicago, is not tremendously appealing, but in weeks 10-12 they face Seattle, St. Louis, and Tennessee.

Drop it for:  San Francisco (vs. TEN), Seattle (vs. DET), Atlanta (vs. WSH)
Don't drop it for:  Miami (@NE), Dallas (@PHI), San Diego (@NYG)

Hey Brad, thanks for reading. I'm not high on any of the defenses you mentioned because of their matchups this week, but in general I would be inclined to avoid the empty spot unless you are confident you can win the week anyway. I think defenses are pretty disposable this year because chances are there will be one on the wire facing Detroit, Cleveland, Washington, Oakland, St. Louis, etc on any given week (unless your league is deeper than average).

My D is Minn and I can't drop anyone due to bye week. Should I drop for Arizona, San D or Miami or take the egg?
