Spring Training Week One Question:

Why Hanley Ramirez is Fantasy Baseball’s number one pick?

Chase Williams, the home team, will take the pro side to this debate

So you find yourself with the first overall pick in your fantasy baseball draft and are wondering who to select?     First, sit back and enjoy the moment.  You are in a very enviable position, much like Johnny Drama at a Viking Quest convention; everyone wants to be in your shoes.

Quit daydreaming, it’s time to snap back to reality and make that selection.   The first few rounds of your draft should set the foundation for the team that will ultimately win your league.  Your objective is to select a player that tilts the odds in your favor.  I’m going to help make the decision easy for you.

Here are a few numbers to consider from the 2008 MLB season:

28:  The number of players that hit 30 or more home runs
16:  The number of players that had 30 or more stolen bases

And finally the most telling of them all:

2:  The number of players that hit at least 30 home runs with at least 30 SB’s.  Only Hanley Ramirez and Grady Sizemore accomplished the 30/30 feat (as an added point of emphasis no other players even hit 20/30 or 30/20).

In 2008 Hanley finished third among shortstops in BA and first in HR, R, SLG% and OBP%.  There were no outliers in his peripherals to indicate a regression is imminent.  His HR to Fly ball ratio was the only area that showed major improvement, however at just 24 years of age in 08, his power is still maturing and that was to be expected.

Hanley’s detractors may point to his RBI totals or the decline in SBs in 08 from the previous two seasons.  My response?  The RBI’s should be much improved if the Marlins stick with their decision to move Hanley to the three-hole, and his SBs should at minimum remain consistent with his 08 totals.  In 221 career at-bats batting third, he’s had 14 stolen bases (pro-rated to 600 at-bats correlates to 38 SB’s).

Some may make a case for Albert Pujols, David Wright or Jose Reyes with this selection.  I’m not going to discount any of those three players because they are all fantastic in their own right.  However, I think that Hanley’s ability to contribute to all five categories from arguably the thinnest fantasy position sets him apart from the rest.  In a standard 10 to 12 team snake draft you can always grab a solid 1B or 3B in the following rounds, but the fact remains that the only other shortstops remotely close to Hanley (Reyes and Jimmy Rollins) will be gone before you pick again.  Meanwhile, other quality first and third basemen will still be available…  Heck, if you play with a league of Lenny Melnick’s, Ryan Howard will be there!

Remember, numbers don’t lie (unless your name is Madoff), select Hanley and thank me later.

I may be a little bit biased here as Chase and I know each and both represent Fantasy Sandlot.com, but I'm giving the point to him regardless.

He has the stats to back up his argument.
BTW Chase, you are indeed the only one that watches Entourage.

Thanks for the support thus far fellas! I had to figure out a way to include a Madoff reference somewhere in here... You have to love a good Ponzi scheme.

I guess we don't have any "Entourage" fans on here? I was thinking the Johnny Drama reference would at least garner one comment.

I agree with Marcus. Chase Williams had the numbers to prove what he was talking about. Point Chase, even though I think Pujols should be number one smilies/smiley.gif
Tony\'s right...

The point about only 2 players going 30/30 last year was money for your argument. Nice rip on Bernie Madoff as well.

Best stat I have seen thus far !

2: The number of players that hit at least 30 home runs with at least 30 SB’s. Only Hanley Ramirez and Grady Sizemore accomplished the 30/30 feat (as an added point of emphasis no other players even hit 20/30 or 30/20).
