Spring Training Week One Question:

Why Hanley Ramirez is Fantasy Baseball’s number one pick?

Andrew Deehr , the away team, will take the con side to this debate Why should Hanley Ramirez be the number 1 pick? No really, why should he? All he does is hit 30+ home runs, steal 30+ bases, hit for .300 average and score 120+ runs a season. Those are some great stats and those stats could be better with age, but he’s not there just yet.

Hanley has increased his HR rate the last three years from 17 to 29 to 33 which figure to level off this year in the low 30’s, but what makes him so good is his power speed combo that most other players don’t have. But there in lies the problem going into this coming season, he might not be a 30/30 man again, not while hitting 3rd in that lineup.

He will increase his RBI’s for sure at the expense of possibly some runs scored and his very valuable stolen bases. That’s gaining one category while dropping possibly in two. Sure Florida is probably a better team with him in the 3 hole, but your fantasy team won’t be. Stolen bases are worth more to fantasy teams then RBI’s as a whole because there are many more runs driven in then there are bases stolen.

There were only 2799 stolen bases in all of the major leagues last year as apposed to 22585 runs scored. That makes the stolen base almost worth 10 times as much as an RBI or a run scored. I know I know, that doesn’t translate completely to fantasy value otherwise Willy Tavaras would be my number 1 pick, but you understand how much more value there are in stolen bases then runs. His reduced stolen base total from this past season along with his move down in the order leads me to believe his stolen base totals will decline.

If you strictly look at numbers such as Bill James’s power/speed numbers Hanley is better then almost anyone else in the game just based off of last season, but fantasy is typically played with 5 categories, not 2. So I took that theory and expanded it to all 5 standard roto categories and found that Jose Reyes was more valuable to fantasy teams because of his overall number of steals plus his high numbers in other categories. HanRam’s number was 30.77 and Reyes’s was 33.14.

That all being said he’s still a fantastic fantasy player, in fact he may be the best, but he’s still young and he’s hitting in a new spot in the order which will typically cut down on his stolen base opportunities.

There are other players out there that have their high end numbers for a longer time. I’d rather have a player who has been consistent with their numbers and who also has a better lineup around them that could aide in their production.

Hanley will stick at the 3 position and continue to produce his SB totals, seeing as no one else on Florida will run. Also, have you seen how big he has gotten? He is a MAN. I don't care what the other guys have done over several years; you need to strike while the iron is hot...

... may cut Hanley's overall steal totals, but honestly, does anyone really see them sticking with that experiment any longer than they did last season? The guy had an OBP of .400 last season, and it's not exactly like Cameron Maybin, who posted a 31.8% K rate in 108 games at AA, is ready to step up to the majors and get on base enough to justify a spot at the top of the lineup...

Joey's organizational skills were better than the con-man's. He told me why I want Han-Ram on my team, and I believed it. I couldn't quite follow the other guy's logic. I also like how Joey compared Han-Ram directly to some big shots like Pujols, letting me know exactly what I was in for. I'm going with the pro-guy on this one; he's definitely got more going than just home-field advantage.
