Aaron Hill: The Sleeper We Slept On PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Expectations were high for Aaron Hill last year and his let down was disappointing. However, you can’t blame the guy. We have seen many athletes battle with post-concussion syndrome and it is no laughing matter. Hill suffered through it from May until the end of the season.

It now appears that Hill is back to full strength and he is off to a fast start to the 2009 season. As of yesterday, Hill was hitting .300 with 5 R, 2 HR, and 8 RBI. He followed that up on Monday with a 3 for 5 day and a stolen base. The guy is doing it all so far but can he keep it up for a full season?

Having missed most of last season, Hill may have some trouble getting used to a 162 game grind all over again. That is not a slight on him but it comes with the territory when a player missed significant time the previous season. It would be wise for Cito Gaston to rest him occasionally as to not burn him out too early.

Gaston is doing fantasy owners a favor by batting Hill second in the Blue Jays lineup. You have to love the fact that Hill will be hitting in front of potent bats like Alex Rios, Vernon Wells, and Adam Lind. Hill should be afforded plenty of opportunities to score runs and drive them in as well.

Hill’s 2007 season was a breakthrough to the tune of a .291 BA, 87 R, 17 HR, and 78 RBI. Many people were expecting even better from him last season but the concussion set those plans back. Perhaps it set them back by only a year. I’m trying not to get ahead of myself but the results thus far have been promising.

If Hill can match or better his ’07 stats, he would rank right up in the top seven or eight Second Basemen. Health aside, I’m confident that he can reach that lofty status. Hill was one of those sleepers that some people slept on. I was able to scoop up Hill in the 29th round of one draft and he is fitting nicely in my MI position. I have got a feeling that we will not be sleeping on him after this year.

Writer's Note: The world of baseball is a little less bright and colorful today.  The losses of Mark Fidrych and Harry Kalas came as a shock to us all.  Fidrych was a character is the truest sense but in the most innocent sense.  A team-first player whose antics and play entertained baseball fans and had the world watching.  Kalas is a legend of the sport and one of the all-time great broadcasters.  I knew him more for his work with NFL films, which I grew up watching.  However, when I had the chance to listen to a Harry Kalas broadcast of Phillies games, I took advantage.  They will both be sorely missed.
