Five Comeback Players for Fantasy Football Drafts PDF Print E-mail
Player Analysis
Written by Jim Day

Chad Pennington can lay claim to one feat that no other NFL quarterback has ever been able to accomplish. No I am not referring to his having the weakest arm in NFL history, which may actually be true, but he is the only quarterback to ever win the Comeback Player of the Year award twice; once in 2005 and again in 2008.

Now we are not implying that Pennington has a shot to do it a third time in 2010, but if Henne were to go down… Anyway, here are five players with good shot at the award in 2010, with number one being my choice for the winner.

The Browns traded WR Braylon Edwards to the Jets earlier this week in a move dubbed by some as addition by subtraction.  And while Cleveland did get rid of a negative influence in Edwards, it is a mistake to think it did not pick up anything worthwhile in the deal.

Player Analysis

There were many strong performances as the NFL season kicked off for 2009. Five rookies stood out as worth monitoring, sitting on rosters, or even starting as the season progresses. There may not be as much overall talent as in 2008 but it is still much too early to tell.

Three tight ends hauled in two touchdown passes in Week 1. Veterans Jeremy Shockey, in his eighth season, and Ben Watson, in his sixth year, both turned the trick. The other was Seattle’s John Carlson, who caught six balls for 95 yards in the opener versus St. Louis.

Carlson was a second-round pick in the 2008 draft out of Notre Dame. In his career with the Fighting Irish, Carlson had 100 receptions for 1,093 yards and eight touchdowns. In his senior season, he led the team with 40 catches and 372 yards and finished second with three scores.

Mock Draft Central – 7th overall

Jake Delhomme, QB, Carolina Panthers 2008 (246 comps -3,288 yards – 15 TDs – 12 INTs)

Lately, many Fantasy Owners have been dismissing QB Jake Delhomme as Fantasy irrelevant. Once upon a time, this was far from the truth.

Depth Perceptions: New England Patriots' Cornerbacks PDF Print E-mail

Depth Perceptions is a weekly look at the depth chart and positional battles all over the NFL.

One common thread that has run through the near decade-long successful run of the New England Patriots has been their ability to adapt to personnel changes. The Patriots have shown a remarkable ability to utilize every player on the roster to help improve the team (see QB Tom Brady filling in for the injured Drew Bledsoe and leading them to SB XXXVI title in 2001). Plus, they have displayed an uncanny dexterity to fill holes in desperate scenarios (see WR Troy Brown pressed into defensive duty in 2004 due to a myriad of injuries in the backfield).

I'll go on record about the San Francisco 49ers: they would be better served by naming a starting quarterback before going into camp. With their recent announcement that they will decide it by the third preseason game, we now know that won't happen.

Sizing Up Maurice Jones-Drew PDF Print E-mail

As we approach the start of training camps – and with them, the beginning of Fantasy Draft season – one of the players who has most sharply divided fantasy experts and owners has been Jacksonville running back Maurice Jones-Drew.

A fair amount of people think he’s the No. 2 – in point per reception leagues, an occasional No. 1 – draft pick in Fantasy Drafts. Just as many people think he is a disaster waiting to happen. There are several reasons stated for this – the offensive line, the pass game (or lack thereof), no wide receivers – but most commonly quoted is ‘he’s too small’.
