The injury bug bit the Houston Texans in a big way as rookie RB Ben Tate will apparently miss the season after suffering a broken ankle in last night’s contest against the Arizona Cardinals. There has been a ton of speculation about the RB by committee scenario amongst Arian Foster, Steve Slaton, and Tate but this is down to a two-headed monster. After Slaton’s outstanding rookie season in 2008 (1,282 yds, 10 total TDs, 50 rec.) his production dropped like a rock in 2009 managing only 3.3 ypc while battling fumbling issues before ultimately having his season ended with a neck injury. Foster will be the odds-on favorite to start in Week 1 but this is an ideal handcuff situation as both players will be seeing plenty of carries in 2010 with Ben Tate out of the mix for 2010

--More than almost any team in the league right now, the Denver Broncos are scaring away fantasy owner due to injuries and uncertainty. First, they (justifiably) broke the bank to lock up their pass-rusher extraordinaire Elvis Dumervil and he promptly tore his pectoral muscle which will result in at least a four month absence. Now, with injuries to RBs Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter the Broncos have signed LenDale White, Justin Fargas and are negotiating with Brian Westbrook to come on board.

Head coach Josh McDaniels noticeably put his stamp on the team by running off Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall. To his credit, he coached QB Kyle Orton to a career year in 2009 (3,802 yds, 21 TDs, 86.8 rating) but with Eddie Royal and rookies Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker as his main targets will Orton be able to overcome all of those changes and deal with another slew of injuries in the backfield? Considering their defense had major issues during their 2-8 slide last year (26th versus the run), I am proceeding with caution and will be looking at most of these players as value picks, there is simply too much risk. If I’m wrong, McDaniels is worth all of the hype unlike Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weis before him.

--Glen Coffee’s abrupt retirement will have an impact on fantasy football owners especially those who own or are targeting RB Frank Gore. There was some debate as to whether Coffee would keep his backup job or if rookie Anthony Dixon out of Mississippi State would challenge him for carries. For now, the Niners will use Dixon and veteran Michael Robinson to spell Gore so look to handcuff Gore with one of them (it’s likely Dixon but the situation should be monitored throughout training camp). The loss of he 2009 third-round pick Coffee was certainly an unexpected blow to their depth chart.

--Ty Warren is lost for the season in New England due to a hip injury that will require surgery. He has started 92 of 105 games since the Patriots selected him in the first round of the 2003 draft, recording 496 tackles, 20.5 sacks and four forced fumbles. As the starting defensive end in the 3-4 scheme, Warren’s place will be taken by a combination of veterans Gerard Warren and Damione Lewis as well as rookie Kade Weston, a seventh-round draft choice. New England’s defense ranked well statistically overall last season (5th in the league) but will need to fortify a pass rush to bolster the unit that gave up 28 TDs through the air (20th in the NFL)

--We all know the Vikings get too much pub as it is due to a certain QB’s vacillating whims but for those other players who have not hinted at retirement, the amount of time missed has to be a significant concern. Sidney Rice (hip) has missed all 24 practices to date, Percy Harvin (personal reasons, migraines) has missed 21, and Adrian Peterson (hamstring) has sat for 16. One would hate to assume that No. 4 has set a bad precedent for his teammates but it’s worth asking the question. Tom Coughlin once famously said about his team’s mounting injuries, “It's a mental thing, I believe, as much as anything else”. I am confident Adrian Peterson will be back and ready to go at full speed for Week 1 but no one else on the Vikings’ offense instills confidence unless Favre is back in the saddle.

As proven with Miles Austin's breakout in 2009 no team's wide receiver depth chart is rock solid.  Surprises can come from anywhere and fantasy owners that capitalize often walk away with the hardware.  That said, these are some jobs most open for competition as of early August.

The NFL is back and did not disappoint in Week 1 as we saw some crazy endings (Brandon Stokley thanks the lovely people of Cincinnati) and some impressive performances (Drew Brees apologizes to the lovely people of Detroit). Since, this is our first legitimate look at the 2009 versions of every team in the league, we won’t consider any of them to be on the rise or fall just yet. We start with the champs and make our way all the way down the ladder to a team that will surprise no one, even if you are starting to develop a soft spot for them (I know I am).
