The Arizona Fall League (AFL) announced their Rising Stars Showcase game participants yesterday. A list of future Major League Baseball All-Stars will take field representing their respective parent clubs, but there are notable players missing from this game.
The first snub is Andrew Lambo, the Los Angeles Dodgers No. 1 Prospect, according to Baseball America. Lambo, in 12 AFL games, is batting .423, which ranks him second overall, with two home runs, and 11 RBI. The other hitter not appearing in the game is Bryan Peterson of the Florida Marlins. Peterson, a fourth round pick by Marlins in 2007, is batting .411 with two home runs and six RBI.
One pitcher left off the roster is Donald Veal, a Rule 5 draft pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 25-year-old Veal endured a trying 2009 season, mainly due to the unusual spot of being a Rule 5 Draft pick stuck in the Majors. Knowing they would risk losing Veal if they took him off the 25-man roster at any point, the Pirates hid him in the bullpen all season. So far in the AFL, Veal has posted a 2-0 record with a 0.71 ERA, 6/1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and has given up only seven hits over 12 2/3 innings.
There will be plenty of stars out Saturday night as East meets West, and you can catch it all on the MLB Network with Diamondbacks announcer Daron Sutton and MLB Network's Tony Clark. A live video feed will also be available on MLB.com.
