With the recent announcement of the 2009 All-Star Teams, I thought it would be appropriate to put together a roster from each league of fantasy studs. Keep in mind, these players are not necessarily the ones I would chose for the real deal; it is merely a collection of guys who have excelled in the five major point-getting categories. Catcher: Joe Mauer – Yeah, he missed the first month of the season, but his counting stats are still better than nearly all other AL catchers. Of this group, only Victor Martinez has surpassed Mauer in runs and RBI. We all knew he could hit for average, but no one thought he would hover around .400 for as long as he has. Plus, Mauer appears to have found his power stroke, as he has already eclipsed his career-high in home runs with 14. Reserve: Victor Martinez
First Base: Justin Morneau – There are a few first basemen in the AL having fabulous years (what’s gotten into Paul Konerko?), but Morneau has clearly established himself as the premiere fantasy stud in ’09. He currently ranks first in RBI and second in runs, home runs and average. He won’t steal a base all year, but that isn’t a big loss at his position. Reserve: Mark Teixeira
Reserve: Aaron Hill
Shortstop: Jason Bartlett – Jeter and Bartlett are in a virtual tie, as they are nearly identical in every category except for runs and average. Jeter has a significant advantage in the former, while Bartlett has a comparable advantage in the latter. Bartlett gets the nod because his current average of .354 is so good that it could single-handedly offset a couple of disappointing averages on a given team. Reserve: Derek Jeter
Third Base: Chone Figgins – This is another very close battle when the comparison is for the purpose of fantasy baseball because the two players at hand are polar opposites. Evan Longoria is a more typical third baseman who elicits great power, while Chone Figgins is a steals and runs machine. The player whom you choose would depend on your personal philosophy, but I give Figgins the nod because of his edge in their batting averages. Reserve: Evan Longoria
Outfield: Carl Crawford, Jason Bay and Torii Hunter – Crawford is here because of his complete dominance in steals; Bay is here because of his dominance in RBI, and Hunter is here because he is a genuine five-tool threat this year. Actually, none of these three are slouches in any category, which gives them a collective boost over the rest of the field. There are a lot of players having career years from the crop of AL outfielders, though, including the very impressive youngsters seen below. Reserves: Adam Lind, Adam Jones and Shin-Soo Choo Starting Pitcher: Zack Greinke – The Cy Young favorite is a different discussion, but no one in the AL can match Greinke’s combination of wins, strikeouts, WHIP and ERA. Reserves: Felix Hernandez, Roy Halladay, Justin Verlander, Edwin Jackson Closer: Joe Nathan – Brian Fuentes may be leading the league in saves, but just like last year, the Angels’ closer is not actually the best in the AL. Fuentes has too much inflation in his WHIP and ERA to win the job here. In fact, he doesn’t even make my reserves, as Aardsma has quietly blown by him in every closer category except for saves. Reserves: Jonathan Papelbon, Mariano Rivera, David Aardsma Up next, the NL…
